Dog FightingAs owners or supporters of the wonderful "bull breeds", we are called to bring an end to this cruel sport. The history of dog fighting is as old as the history of the bully breeds, and, sadly, it continues today. In a small "pit" or wooden arena, two dogs are squared off against each other until one or both can no longer continue. Often, it is the American Pit Bull Terrier that is the victim of this sport, though many dog breeds have caught the fancy of the promoters of this cruel sport. Enticed by the thrill of gambling, or a truly sadistic heart, these individuals watch as their dogs suffer enormous wounds and often death. These poor animals usually receive little or no treatment from puncture wounds, bleeding, dehydration, lost body parts, broken teeth, and infection. It is surprising that something so dreadful could draw a crowd, yet events are not uncommon in many areas, especially urban areas.
Fighting of dogs is illegal in all 50 states of the US. In fact, just being a spectator is illegal in 48 states. If you suspect dog fighting in your area, please don't hesitate to contact the Humane Society.
