As far as your location...I am really trying to point you to some reputable people in the breed, even if it just means going and talking to them and seeing their dogs. You don't need to wait until you are ready to buy one to start poking around. You have a lot of time so take advantage of it. There is MUCH to learn about this breed, its breeders, and fanciers. The more you know, the better decision you will make when it comes to deciding on a litter. If you can at least tell me the State you live in I can try and point you to some reputable people in this breed and maybe some AB shows in your area where you could meet a multitude of breeders and enthusiasts.

I have a AmStaff/Pitbull rescue dog and he is one of the sweetest dogs in the world. I don't think just because a dog is a rescue it is more likely to be vicious. You should check out both when looking for your dog. Also, some dogs just don't get along. My dog gets along with my dads jackrussells but for some reason doesn't get along with other dogs. Dogs are like people, no matter what they breed, they just don't always like each other! Good luck!

Don't forget one of the most important aspects of AB's. They can be veeeeery stubborn, they are not a pushover at all. If I wouldve done a lot more research, I'm not so sure I wouldve gotten one as my first dog. It has taken a lot of patience, and have worked with my dog through a lot of different obedience issues. From dog aggression, DOMINANCE issues, not pulling on a leash(weightpulling champs in pedigree), and the most important is being SOCIALIZED with people. He was a 1 person dog for his first 2 years. Good luck, keep reading. I wish I wouldve known about this site when I got Bruno, there are a lot of knowledgible dog people on this site.
