Thanks for all the kind words everyone.
It's impossible for someone to have poisoned him where I am and I am really careful on his walks, so I am ruling out poison. Due to all of the tests they did on him when he arrived at the clinic, we seem to think it was likely cancer. His heart was checked to be good so no problems there, he had no signs before that day of illness or poisoning, he had cloudy xrays (due to fluid in the body), and the vet felt irregularities in his abdomen. His red blood cells were highly elevated, and even though he was dehydrated, his electrolytes were perfect at the time. I wish I had a necropsy done but nothing can change what happened. |

Thanks Lisa and everyone else.
I am just happy that he could hear my voice and feel my touch when he passed, even though he couldn't see me the whole time at the hospital (his eyes were closed). He had stabilized (with oxygen, IV, injections) about a half hour before going back into shock and high fever, and they had a long plan of treatment for him - minimum 2-3 days of work (IV pump, transfusions, injections, etc), but I had decided to stay with him through the night anyhow. The vet said this was a very good thing so that I could be with him through his final moments and she would have hated to make that decision without me there as well when they failed to re-stabilize him and his condition worsened. The memories and images of these last moments were truly disturbingly violent, but I would have felt much worse if he had passed without me being there with him. |

Oh no, this is so heartbreaking
I'm so sorry for your loss! I will never forget that handsome Meaty mug with those soulful eyes. It's such a tough thing to go through but you will be glad you stayed with him until the end. RIP Meaty
