Default How Far Can I Walk my English Bulldog?

When I got my puppy (last week) I was told that even adult English Bulldogs can't walk very far. (The BCA member said - well some of them can walk as far as a mile). My puppy Aimee is a little over four months old. How far can I walk her? (when she is an adult how far will I be able to walk her? I was hoping I'd be able to take some nice walks with her!

Omg..2 Bully LOL.. he wins.. and he's givin you a good workout too. Lookin good.

Naphta, it really depends. Especially on how good their breathing is and the weather and such. She looks pretty good to me but she does have the big rope and such. Do like 2Bully and give her lots of exercise in your yard or where she can run around. See how she does. Over time you should be able to build her up to take decent walks. Many on here do. I' don't have an EB but as long as you watch her for exhaustion and make sure to take water to keep her hydrated I think you can go further than that. Keep it down a bit and build up for the next couple of months. You might need more rests than some other dogs. Smiles. Where do you live... thinking about summer coming up.

bully toy ideas:

Jolly balls
ones like 2bully posted, are hard and called "push and play" and the one with the handle called "tug and toss".
some can be found at Petsmart and PetCo.
http://www.jollypets.com/JollyPetsHome.html

the Egge

can be found on ebay and jeffers pet http://www.jefferspet.com/ssc/produc...8739&cmkw=egge

a cheaper version of the Egge is an empty water cooler bottle.

flirt pole (i just use a long horse whip or lunge)
most dogs will want a toy tied to the end, but Lolita just likes the string.

spring pole
buy a large spring at home depot and tie it to a tree branch or under deck then use a carabiner and put a toy or rope on the end.

15 minutes playing with any of these and you'll have one warn out bully...well for 30 minutes at least!!

Here's how I set up Olie's ... I used some kind of climbing rope and attached clips to the end of it and ran the rope caddy corner over the kennel, attached a rope toy to the end of it and he was ready to go. If I didn't have a steel reinforced kennel, I could never do this. But wow, he goes at it everyday. I must admit that replacing the toy every few weeks is a little expensive, but oh well.

Also, I chained up some boat bumpers in his kennel. He destroys them quick, but he gets a workout.

Water bottles of all kinds litter the dog lot. Good thing I live in WV.

Finally, I built an agility course in the riding arena (used to have horses). I literally built the entire course out of left over lumber and PVC.
The only thing I bought was a collapsable tunnel ($24.99 at petco).

For the most part, Olie runs around like an idiot on the agility course, and we play and make a game of learning the course. But, since I did it for fun it truely is a like going to the carnival for him. Old Baby just kinda tries to get in Olie's way and pretend like she goes thru the course.

Then every Sunday, we go for a drive (usually about an hour away) and we hike. Baby gets to lounge around with my roommates and get some one on one attention while I wear out the young man.

I have lost an additional 9 pounds this summer, Olie is in great shape and Baby is happier than she has ever been. Olie's behavior is superb and I know that there is a direct correlation between his exercise and behavior. Baby, on the other hand, being a bullmastiff is quite content with moderate exercise. She prefers laying in the warm sun mostly!!!!

Maybe I should take some pics and type up the budget for the agility course. It was a lot of fun to build and is more fun to enjoy.

Great post! I'm still a new bully owner, and I've learned from experience that if Eleanore doesn't get enough playtime, she's going to be a rascal. LOL A lot of the time if she is acting "bad", all I have to do is play with her for a while and it's like we have a whole other dog.

agreed, I can tell when Jack is bored and he wants to do something, he gets restless and starts barking. I just got back from a 1.5 mile walk and Jack is napping. He needs to do something every few hours be it some ob or a walk or run in the back yard.

NAPHTA - i to havea 4 mnth old EB - and she is actually very energetic on walks easily completing a 2 mile walk - however if she runs around with me and the ball for 5/10 minutes she is zonked out - if you have a block i would walk around the block so your always close to home so you can gauge how tired she is feeling - and maybe some kind of fetch/ball game in the garden to see how much FUEL she has when running.

Weh me and rokka get back she does like a nice chill and snore session before continueing - we walk once a day and play ball once or twice.
