Default EB Infected Tail

OK my EB's tail pocket covers most of his tail. Actually most of his tail is in the pocket. We have been treating it with cream from the vet that smells like bacon for a while now. Anyways it became infected and the vet had to shave everything back there and put him on antibotics to clean it up. Well it has been smell free since then. I noticed last night that it was smelling again. He is still on his antibotics for the infection which seems to be helping. The cream I have to put in there is a brownish color and gets all over everything he touches and is very hard to clean up. Are there any other treatments out there that may help with the smell and keep the mess down?

I would ask for something else or look into having his tail removed if it keeps getting infected. As much of a pain as it is for you to clean up the mess the medications make of your house, an infected tail pocket is extremely painful to your bulldog.

Poppy had a really nasty tail pocket when we first got her. She was also overweight. Now nearly a year later after she has lost a little weight ( about 3kg) her tail pocket hardly ever gives her problems. I do still clean it weekly or every two weeks. I would rather not get the tail removed so I feel weight loss, even just a little helped. Just a thought.

Most people clean the tail pocket too much... Cash and Scarlett both have a pocket (not a bad one) Scarlett's gets cleaned only when she has a bath once a month or so & its never dirty and Cash gets his cleaned every 2 weeks during his baths. You want it clean and dry, keeping it moist is what makes the infection happen. If you have malaseb you can wipe with that wait 10 mins and then dry with a paper towel or a cloth and leave it alone. I wouldn't put anything in there uless its dry to begin with - I'd avoid creams and use powder instead - the desetin athletes foot powder is good (it has anti fungals in it)

Hope this helps..

yea i totally agree, you need to keep it dry the cream may be leaving it to moist throughout the day so if possible switch to a powder based cure. and with the severity of the pocket you may want to set up a regimen of cleaning that is a little more fequent sa once a week or every other week

When they have a tight screw tail sometimes there is a pocket underneath it where moisure can collect and cause problems. Not all dogs have it, and for some who do it never causes a problem.
