Default Rudy's Allergy Test Results

Rudy has been battling allergies for nearly nine months. His story is similar to Duke's on here. We had Rudy tested (blood test) over three weeks ago and the results came back yesterday. My poor pup is allergic to a whole host of stuff. The list includes the following:

Primary Foods: eggs, milk, soybean, and lamb

Molds: alternaria, fusarium, rhizopus, helminthosprium, and aureobasidium

Weeds: mugwort, plantain, russian thistle, ragweed, dandelion, lamb’s quarter, goldenrod, pigweed, yellow dock,

Grasses: rye, june and timothy

Foods that were recommended were the following: 1. Wellness (venison, duck, chicken, beef, salmon w/potatoes or rice); 2. Purina (LA-formula) 3. Hills (same formula as Wellness) 4. Eukanuba (same formula as Wellness) 5. Natural Balance (same formula as Wellness) Note: he doesn’t like Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance food 6. Royal Canin (same formula as Wellness).

Our vet is out of town until Tuesday so we haven’t had a chance to speak with her in depth about the results, however, I’m thinking that there’s not much we can do about molds, weeds, and grasses except keep him out of the yard except to do his business than wipe his face, belly, and feet. We’ll probably go with the injections for these things as well, depending on what the dermatologist says. As of now, we are not sure which type of food to go with for Rudy. He loves a piece of cheese when he gets his meds but now that’s no more.

I’d appreciate your thoughts, concerns, opinions, and recommendations.

Thanks

At least you know now, I bet a change a food will make a big difference!

I have a friend with a bulldog whose been getting the allergy injections for about a year now, she said that while they're pricey - they're worth it. After the year he's almost 100%. I know not everyone has that success rate, but I hope it works out for you!

thats great to know.. Duke just started with the shots.. we were told to be patient.... he gets one shot every other day now for 60 days then every third day til day 90 then once every three weeks ..( they try to desensitize them slowly from the allergy )

We changed Duke to Dick Van Patton Duck an Potatoe it is the allergy formula Limited Ingredients and he has done very well with it.. his coat is nice and shiny and we felt after a week or so on this he had more energy ?

Good Luck ! I feel for you as we too are battling the allergies..

These are the two I would consider (not a fan of Purina or Iams), he doesn't like any of the NB foods? What about the California Natural Pure and simple line?

Started Rudy on the Wellness Super5 Mix Chicken, I sure hope this helps him. So far he seems to like how it taste but I haven't totally switched over it just the new food yet. We are going to start him on the shots for the grasses and molds. Vet said it should be a good time too since cold weather is coming and he won't be exposed as much while taking the shots. We should know something come Spring. Wish us luck.

Suggestion; stay away from Purina, Hills and Eukanuba. I was involved in indepth studies regarding these brands and how they were made. Believe me their not what they claim to be. Taste of the wild is excellent as is Canidae wheat free dog food. Wheat, corn, rice, chicken, and Beet pulp are just a few common sources of allergy producing food sources. You also may have to feed completely raw food. The frozen "Chubs' that some natural pet stores offer are excellent.

thankfully, there are a number of foods that he can eat that won't affect his food allergies.

as far as the outdoor ones go, thats always alot more difficult. constantly wiping down the feet, especially if you don't dry them well each time after can lead to yeasty feet and legs.

it may look silly, but you may consider having a light weight, t-shirt material shirt or pair of "jammies" for him, it will at least keep his legs, and belly mostly covered.

if hes not going through tall weeds though, or rolling around outside, even some light weight booties or the boot liners they make will keep his feet protected.

you can also look into atopica for him, alot of dogs on it do VERY well with their allergies . the immune shots dont always work, and sometimes the dog will get worse. its a 50-50 shot. the Dick van patten LID formula is an allergy formula, with minimal ingredients, its worth to give it a try or check it out. shirts and jammies like majesticmooose said too will help. i have shirts /coats/jammies on ruby for her allergies and it keeps her scratching to a minimum. plus we do atopica as well..

I'm feeding Omi DVP venison & sweet potato - allergy/grain free and this spring/summer - she will be wearing t-shirts.
As for treats - only carrots and a few apple slices (when I feel like cutting one up!)
