Trey is right, a dog will not starve itself lol Give him a certain time frame to eat, if he doesn't eat w/in that time (say 10 or 15 minutes, that might even be too long) take it up. Then don't offer food again till next feeding time. It won't take long before he figures out he needs to eat when you offer it. And I would take away the treats as well.

Could also be b/c he isn't feeling so hot either. Meds might make him not very hungry.

What im scared is if he doesent like the food but i already spent a fortune (at least for me) in making sure he gets good food. So when i see him be a picky eater with good food, and he eats crappy food like nobodys buisness, it frustrates me. All i know, im not going back to that beneful crap anymore. HE NEEDS to learn to eat it, but when i see that he doesent, it makes me want to go out and buy can foods to mix it in there. ANd even then, he takes can foods for granted. Sometimes i pour the can food on his bowl with the kibbles and he will eat half his bowl and after 15 min, the mush food is all cold with a wierd smell...so obviously he wont eat it.

Also, excersizing my pup dailyincrease apetite?

Lolita was 36 lbs at 5 months old. So 40 isnt obscene.
At 2 years old she's stable at about 48-50 lbs.

Yea, but my pup is a male. So I would think at 5 months he should be close to 50 pounds.

by 6 months old Orson was 60 lbs. and he's topped out at 70 (4 years old).
seems he did all his weight and height growing by 6 months and then several years to fill out (get his wide chest, big head, etc.)

food OF YOUR CHOICE down for the dog, and if pup does not right away tuck in, pick up the dish, and either pour it back in the bag, or stick it in the fridge.

try again at night. same deal, if pup does not immediately start eating, or even if he is eating, but just picking at it, take it up, and try again the next day.

also, since the pup does like treats, try hand feeding pup his kibble during training sessions and walks.

2.5 cups almost seems like a lot for a pup especially if you are feeding the good stuff... someone correct me if I'm wrong. Mater gets 2.5 to 3 cups a day and he's full grown at 60 lbs.

different foods have different recommendations, but that's all it is a recommendation. You have to figure out what's right for your dog. My Sasha is 3 she gets 2 cups a day, but the kids drop food all the time so I know she gets more than that. Her weight stays around 50-55. I'm guessing I can't tell you the last time I weighed her.

To the OP your pup is 5 months old and has been sick how many times now? I think your main concern should be a healthy dog, not a big dog.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

Anyways, he's 5 months and 2 weeks old and he's weighing 45 pounds now. I've been feeding him castor and Pollux ultra mix for puppies and seems to like it more. I took him to the vet and my vet told me that he is healthy, but he has two baby teeth that still haven't fallen out and he believes this is causing him not to eat with so much and not having enthusiasm. His gums were the baby teeth are, their dark purple.

Anyone have that issue before or heard of it? Dogs loosing appetite due to pain of baby teeth not falling off?

And he really hasent been sick. He had worms when he was 2 months old which is common, and he got tonsilitis at 4 in a half months. So just twice.

These pix might help you out. Here is my boy Juggs, the first pic is him at a year.

This next pic is him at almost 3.

Again at 1.

Again at just about 3

My boy weighs in the neighborhood of 60 pounds. I feed a 50/50 mix of TOTW (Taste Of The Wild) its in a yellow bag Bison something or another and Diamond Extreme Athelete. He gets 1 3/4 cups per day. Here's a few more just for fun.

Her's what he looked like when I brought him home, he weighed in at a whopping 5 1/2 pounds.
