Wife and I decided last Febuary we needed a inside dog for protection. (small crimes around us) We took about a couple months of research to decide on a american bulldog. We read alot that said to introduce him to 100 people in 100 days so we did. Did the obediance class at 6 months. He is very socialized with dogs and people. He is by far the best dog We've ever had.(I call him my son) Problem is he does not seem protective at all. I keep telling the wife at a year he should natually start turning that way, his birthaday is 2-2-09 and so far nothing he just want to lick every body that comes to the door. He definatly is not cowardly as loud noises (power tools, lawn mower ect.) do not phase him like they do our other dogs. I was thinking of finding a local dog trainer mabee willing to come to our house and give him a bad experiance with a stranger to make him more suspicius, but obviously don't want to do more harm than good.

Ususally thats what a bully does lick and love everybody to death... there love bugs..thats the way they are...
Don t worry about getting him train to attack cause when the crimminals will come to your house and see your dog they won t go in... they way you talk about him i would never change him...do you how many dogs on BDB are dog agressive many, including mine....so count yourself very lucky that you got a good dog... |

My boy is a therapy dog with young kids. He also comes to work with me everyday and greets clients. He is solid and happy and social.
BUT he has a proven history of protecting. Just because your dog is friendly doesn't mean when he comes of age/is needed that his natural instincts won't kick in. Now with THAT being said . . . it has been my experience that most dogs, unless trained to do so, will not engage. Do you want your dog to engage or do you just want a nice civil display? These are all things that you seriously have to consider. Do you actually want/need a true personal protection dog? Or just a deterrent.

I american bull dog that convenced me to choose this beed I would consider a good goal. He is super friendly to every body as long as master ok's them. He (the owner) told me his best friend comes over several times a week and plays with the dog. One time in the middle of the day the friend tried to go in the back yard to return a tool and the dog absolutly would not let him in. Absolutly no one comes in the house till they get ok'ed. Called a breeder in Florda and he arived home and found his dog had the gas man cornered up against the house, they had been there with neither one of them moving for four hours. Met a guy on a hike that had an AB he also said his dog would not let anybody in the house without being oked. Met a guy when walking Chopper and he told us that his dog held a theif in their house with only a stare till the police got there. When I asked all four owners say they did nothing to teach this behaveour. I think my dog in any of these instances would run up and lick them. I guess my answer is I want him to be suspitious. |

i really hope some of the people who train in personal protection are going to speak up in this thread.
Making your dog fearful of strangers and wanting to attack anyone that comes to your door is a HORRIBLE IDEA and would be setting your family up for a lawsuit

Oh, what is "of age" as far as this goes.
As far as do we need personal protection -There is a rough neighborhood (read somebody got shot back there a couple months ago) close by and they just added a though road by our house so we have these people often walking in front of our house. Stuff stolen out of our cars more than once. Neighbors got trailor stolen, reported drug activity, knocks on the front door after 11pm to ask for gas money, shower, clothes we don't want ect. Just having him standing behind us might have prevented who knows what even if he was wagging his tail the whole time. I just want him to relize somehow not everybody is good. |

It sounds like you need to find a good PP trainer to evaluate your dog and guide you correctly. We can say nothing much of help on an internet forum. Where are you located?

Your dog should not be wary of strangers or intimidate people. personal protection isn't about having a dog that people are going to be scared of. a dog correctly trained in Personal protection WILL protect you and your family when you are in danger but other than that they are going to be a normal dog in public. If someone is not a threat then your dog should not be wary of them.
