"Marking" is communicating with your dog it can be used with both wanted and unwanted behavior. The easiest way to "mark" is verbally, when the pup/dog does a wanted/desired behavior You "mark" it with "yes" followed by a reward such as food, playtime, and/or affection. To "mark bad behavior you say "no" when the unwanted/undesired behavior happens, then redirect to a desired behavior and "mark" that as "yes".

Wow that will help out alot in my training. I do tell him no and yes but I have not been redirecting and I could see where that could get confusing if I did not redirect and show him what is Good behavior and what is Bad behavior. Thanks again for your knowledge 2bully. Sure am glad I shut my mouth and stayed.

Thanks that sounds like fun. I think I have some work to do before I try that but I get the concept of what your trying to do by marking. It all makes more sense day after day. I have always had dogs and been jealous of others that had dogs that woudl sit and stay and lay down on command. Until now I had no idea where to start and if I would ever have that kind of dog. Well I already have the sit and paw down and I am working on the down trying to get him to lay down from a stand and also sit from lying down. Its hard but I just try about 10 minutes a day and everyday he gets closer and closer to getting it.
