Ha, It seems like I am the "Problem Mother" on the board this week. But you guys all have such good tips, here is another pup dilema. Sorry for the length.

I dont expect our 3 month old pup to be completely housebroken already (we have had him for three weeks), but I feel that NO Progress is being made.

When we got him he had a pretty bad UTI so for the first week housebreaking was pretty difficult, keeping up with him dribbling in the house every 5 min was just impossible (bringing him outside every 5 min) and we gave him a little lienancy about accidents. But now that that is all cleared up I am afraid that week of peeing in the house has set us waaay back in housebreaking.

We are very consistent, he is crated during the day when we are not there and night, he is brought out as soon as he wakes up, after eating, and every hour or so if he is sniffing around or had a long play session. he is always watched like a hawk and if he squats we clap/make noise and take him out to finish and clean up any accidents with a good pet smell killer cleaner. He holds it for 5-6 hours at night in the crate no problem so I know he CAN hold it. But when he is out playing during the day or in the evening he seems to not be making any progress.

For example I will take him out to his area and he will go, we will go back inside to play and 5-10 min later he will squat right in front of me and dribble (not much since he JUST went) on the carpet. Or I will notice him sniffing so I will call him to go out, he will follow me downstairs and squat right in front of the door before we can go outside. We carry him out early in the morning when he first wakes up (since I know his bladder is full) so he makes it outside but in a week or so I wont be able to carry him down two flights of stairs (he sleeps in our room).

I have housebroken dogs before and at this point (a few weeks in) they are atleast making progress. I just want to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Do you kennel him? I don't recall from your other posts. If not... kennel him anytime you can't be hovering over him. Puppies will forget the rules, about 100 times a day, and you have to be there to 'remind' him immediately and often. If you kennel him, you can take him out immediately after he wakes from a nap, let him do his business, and bring him inside for about 15 min of play, then take him out to potty again, BEFORE there is an accident, bring him in for some more play, or cuddling, and take him out again before another nap. Let him sleep in his kennel, when he wakes and needs to go he will be forced to hold it before you get to him to let him out, and he will learn control.

Yes he is crated when he is not being directly played with and at night and when we are not home. We take him out right away and bring him back in. The frusturating part is that there seems to be no reason for him to be going, if I just forgot to take him out after an hour of playing I would get it. But Ill bring him in from a potty break and 5 min later he will squat a pee right in front of me on the carpet.

How do you reprimand him? I have a shaker can that I can throw on the ground if I see the one of them squatting or sniffing around to pee. Just shouting NO doesn't work for my two all the time ( I have kids, and theres alot of shouting in our house, the kids and mine LOL) If the dog's hear the shaker can, even a tiny rattle, they scramble to their kennels. They HATE it, and they absolutely know that the shaker can is meant for THEM.
