My wife has breast cancer. First time 10 years ago. Lots of medical treatments (surgery, chemo, radiation, hormone pills). 5 years passed so we thought it was cured. Popped back up in 2004. Went thru all the same meds (more radical surgery, chemo, radiation). Appeared it was gone again. This past summer, it showed up in her skin. The Sept PET/CAT scans showed that. Oral chemo for 9 months. PET/CAT scans done in Jan showed it's gone from her skin but now it's in her lungs, liver, bones. We start a weekly chemo for 8 weeks. Then the PET/CAT scans in mid-March show no improvement, even some worstening. So the chemo is changed to a different drug every 4 weeks. After the first dose, she is in bed for 2 weeks, her breathing is getting very labored. She is in the hospital now getting a chest drain to remove the fluid from around her lungs (went well) and they are trying to figure out the next step. Her mother is coming to town Fri, our kids are coming home from college tomorrow. Monday I almost thought I was loosing her she was so weak from not eating much and not breathing well due to the rapid fluid accumilation. Her immediate situation has improved, but long term, I just don't know what they are going to do or even can do next with the cancer.
Has anybody here ever reached this stage with a family member or friend ? What happened next ?
