Are you serious? I have been in a hunting family for all my life, and I have never seen a dog used for catch and hold when it comes to deer. As a matter of fact, deer hunting is much, much different from hog hunting. A deer MUST be shot accurately so that it DIES immediately and does not suffer. If not shot correctly, the deer has to suffer for up to 4 miles and you have to track it. If the deer is down and his eyes are open, it must be shot again immediately, no field dressing is to begin UNTIL the deer is dead.
In field class, we were taught NOT to make the deer suffer, it is inhumane, and being caught and held by a dog is inhumane.
The difference between the two??The hog is mean and has the means to fight back with tusks that shred, the deer???If he is lucky, he can kick you and swing a spike, but not as accurately as a hog biting.

I wouldn't recommend it, it doesn't seem fair.

He may not be talking about catching the deer. I guess an AB or other bully with a good nose could be used to track deer, but I don't know if you'd be able to keep the dog from jumping on the deer when it finds it. I know someone around here who uses terrier mixes to track deer.

The way dogs (hounds) are used for deer hunting typically is to find them and run them. Hounds tend to (trained) run game in large (several acres or even miles) circles and rturn to their starting point, the hunters listen for where the dogs are, where they are heading, and cut through to where they believe the dogs/game is going to come by.

When hunting dangerous game (bears, hogs, mountain lions) the dogs corner or tree the game and hold it in place for the hunters to arrive.

The dogs are used basically to chase the deer towards the hunter. Sort of a push them towards the hunter, flush them out sort of thing. In some states deer hunting with dogs is illegal. I doubt any dog could catch a healthy deer, but I suppose there is always some possibility. I don't see where using a bulldog of any kind would be beneficial as opposed to a Hound, Beagle, etc.

Edit ~ oops Tyco beat me

Yes, or at least limited. Fueled by the Bow Hunter in ARK. As far as catching them, hunting dogs won't, but a lot of deer are killed by feral dogs, or by packs of pet dogs that form when owners let them out to roam at night.

Your saying that deer was alive, caught, and killed by that dog? Was it sick or already injured? It appears to have a wound on it's back, and not moving? I won't call you a liar seriously I'm not! I just would like to know the whole story. I'm sure anything can HAPPEN, but the reality of a dog actually catching a healthy deer seems far fetched to me. A deer that has plenty of room to escape of course, and isn't stupid. Just seems unrealistic to me that a healthy deer, as fast as they are, and as high as they can jump would be caught by that dog. Even lions, tigers etc. have hard times catching deers, gazelles and the like ~ reason why the normally try for the easier kills, or strategically kill them in packs. If that dog killed that deer on his own, than kudos to him. lol

my grand dad has 17 acres i take my pup to. every time he has seen a deer he is GONE on the chase. he runs him around in cirles bringing him closer to where i am at. he has almost brought one down, but like someone was saying its verry hard to catch a deer. kudos to your dog fir catching him one. i dont see the problem in using my dog with deer hunting, if there were hogs around here i would hunt them but as i said there isint any. its something he loves to do and something we both can spend time enjoying together, dosent hurt that we will be sharing the meat since hes on the raw diet lol

yeah

Id figure it almost impossible for a dog to catch a healthy deer in the woods. but under certain conditions it seems possible and maybe something worth trying. after getting some hog hunting experience that is.

i used to work at a pharmacy plant for a short period of time and all the workers were avid deer hunters that use dogs to hunt. They said that the male deer is far to smart to be caught by the dogs, unless they are in "rut" season. Which basically means they have female deer on the mind so they do things they normally wouldnt. However they said that female deer arent the smartest thing out there and can be chased down by dogs simply for the fact the dogs have more endurance, and making stupid mistakes i suppose. I have no experience with this so im offering up what ive been told.

I've heard of american bulldogs grabbing and holding a 9 pointer deer. But i don't think it would happen very often.
My old doctor used a pointer to just track and point them out, then you and your gun can take it from there.

I am an avid deer hunter and I am not all that fond of the running of deer or if your dog is capable (I don’t think there are many dogs alive to can chase and catch a mature healthy deer, and then bring it down) of doing so. As a hunter, I don’t enjoy sitting in the stand all morning or afternoon to hear or see a dog, and I most certainly do not enjoy seeing the dog running the deer. The problem with this is deer don’t know property lines therefore you property may be where they start and end but my property is the part you are messing up for me, once one deer is run a lot of times the deer stay where they are to not be seen while others are being run so there goes my morning or afternoon. Unless you can guarantee the dogs will stay on your property then don’t do it and you can’t guarantee that unless you have a 12-16 foot fence (a deer can clear and 8ft fence any day of the week and when chased I am sure 10ft is feasible) because once that dog or dogs get after that deer they are not going to turn because they are like, o crap this is not our property I guess we better stop, dang o well maybe next time, that won’t happen. It just pisses me off to have scouted and found a great spot and then to have it ruined by dogs. Hogs are different, a lot of times they are hunted out of deer season, because there is no season here in GA for them, they are open year round. Don’t get me wrong hunting with dogs is a fun sport, but not deer that is not how they are intended to be hunted. I have 3 bird dogs, and we wait until deer season is out to start our bird season. Why you ask because where I am from if a dog gets away and goes on someone else’s property it gets killed for trespassing, but most of the time our dogs get no more then 50-100 yards in front of us. I do understand you have a working dog and you want to work him. Do the avid deer hunters a favor and find another avenue.

deer hunting and Ab's

I hunt deer. I owned an AB. He went everywhere with me so along he came at the start of deer season.

Mostly he was just compainionship. But every now and then if we hit a deer and the deer ran on us, Id set him loose and he would track him and hold him (if the deer was injured enough to allow my dog to catch him). Otherwise he would just track him for us.

"Running" deer should be illegal everywhere.
