Hi everyone,
My name is Andy and I just moved to Florida from Massachusetts. I have a 16 month old American Bulldog named Keegan. Although I was told he is American, doing some searching on the internet I found out he looks more like an Old English Bulldog.

Yes, my vet said to wait untill he was at least 9 months old so that he can grow some more. The problem is, that (how do I put this delicately) My vet let Keegan grom so when they took "the boys" out Keegan was left with extra skin that isn't going away.
Oh well, he's my baby and it adds character

Keegans " little bumps"

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me out with this. I tried to post on the other forum, but I am not a "member" yet.
Since we have moved down to Florida, Keegan has been getting bumps all over his skin, I am assuming that it is from him rolling around on the grass that has been sprayed with pesticides.
Has anyone ran into this problem, and can anyone tell me a solution? Other than giving him baby Benedryl - which makes hime drowsy

thanks
Andy

The bumps could be what you said, an allergic reaction. But, I just recently moved to Florida, also. We have a fenced yard here, so the dogs are outside a lot more often. The yard ha some fire ant hills. My dogs like to dig. See where I'm heading... Montana had a BUNCH of red bumps around her face and neck area. I think she got to digging or laying in/on a fire ant hill. I got rid of the fire ants and her bumps are all gone now. Just another thought for you.

Oh, and what area of Florida have you moved to? I'm near Tampa.

Keegan'sBumps.

Hi,
We just moved to Ft. Lauderdale...Oakland Park to be exact. We are thinking about checking out the Tampa area in the up coming months for apartments or Houses for rent

I did think of the fire ants, I have heard of them and that's a great thought. I just don't see any ant hills around ( not that they couldn't hide under the grass). I just think that Keegan is not used to certain things down here. He is only 16 months old so maybe he will get used to it. They almost look like Mosquito(sp) bites.

My dog is a outside dog and i live in FL. The only time i ran into this our trees have spanish moss in them and my pup would roll on a piece that had fallen and would get bumps from it. I think the moss carrys what they call redbugs real small.

Could be any of the things the members had told you. I live in Miami and the moskitos are bad and with the rain we just had it can get worse. Ants are a pest too. Welcome to Florida. Also I think your pup is an old english bulldag.

Hi
and thanks to everyone for their advice!
"debs" Yes, I think that Keegan is an "old English" his parents are American Bulldogs, they were both tall. . .or taller than Keegan and were alot wider than Keegan. His dad was 110 lbs and his mom was 96lbs. Keegan ( I think) is topping out at 62 lbs, although he might get wider. His mom had many litters on the farm and the owner had kept 5 of Keegan's siblings. None of the dogs look alike, in fact Keegan is the only one in all the litters that came out with a "cork screw" tail and an overbite, he is also the only one that stands just below my knee ( I am 5'8"). I went on line to a site, and they had all the "bully" breeds and I saw pictures of Old English, and I was floored to see that they all resemble Keegan.
I guess it's a good thing he looks like that because the condo association that I moved into will not allow; German Shepards, Pit Bulls, or American Bulldogs, or any dog that weights over 50 lbs and we ALMOST had to ship Keegs back up North. We finally had to send a fax to the association from my OLD Vet stating that he was English and that there was no Pit in him. OHH. . . by the way did I tell you that there are Two Pit Bulls, Three American Bulldogs, Two Great Danes and many other dogs that OBIOUSLY look more that 50Lbs like Labs and retrievers.
I also get screamed at on the street by people that say "you aren't suppose to have Pit Bulls on this property" I scream back " he's a bull dog, maybe you should educate your self the difference between the two"
Have a good day
Andy

Honestly, the bumps you described sound like hives. Bulldogs (of any type) are very susceptible to allergies, including enviornmental/seasonal allergies. Unless you can pinpoint what's causing the allergy and remove it from his enviornment, this may be a life-long issue. You can have allergy testing done by a vet, but it can be pricey...and sometimes not completely accurate.

You can give Keegan Claritin as a daily remedy to help control his allergies...it won't make him sleepy like Benadryl does. One 10 mg tablet once a day. Make sure it's REGULAR Claritin and NOT Claritin-D (contains a decongestant that is dangerous to dogs). I recommend getting a store brand Claritin, much less expensive!

Welcome and good luck! keegan is a handsome boy! :D

FLORIDA IN DA HIZHOUSE...lol

Hey keegan...we are over here in st pete..my boy had bumps as a pup turned out to be allergy's, which went from bumps to a pretty bad skin condition were he was constantly scratching.
WE tried everything, from changing his food, to baggin the grass when we mowed. We started to change his name to "thumper" cause he would scratch all night long and keep us awake.
Finally, I decided to change vets cause the one i had kept telling it was "puppy achne" I was like "whatever..you're done"

From the day we walked into the new vet deuce has never has a problem again. Now heres the down side......... he is on 10 mg prednisolone every other day and we have to get his liver checked every 6months.

Deuce is happy now, he has alot more free time now that he doent spend every waking hour itching himself.

Thanks again fot the infomation!!
He doesn't have the bumps everyday, only when we bring him to the dog park, that is when he lies on his back and lets the other dogs bite him. That is why I think it might be the grass. There are also kiddie pools there and he drinks the water that is in the pool, the water is changed pretty frequently but there must be something in there because he has diareea (sp) for a couple of days afterward. The funny thing is; he will lie down in the grass on his belley outside the condo, but the moment he turns over onto his back, he will get those bumps all over his back.
I also thought it was Mosquitos, but I look at him when I take him out and I can't see any of those bugs on him. I will try asking the vet.
I am posting another picture of Keegan. . .he is the one with his mouth open ALWAYS!!! the other two dogs in the picture is his FULL black and white brother, Jadin. And his Full sister Avery. Avery is the first litter, Jadin is the second litter and Keegan was from the third litter. None of them look alike.
