DOES IT REALLY MATTER WHAT TYPE OF LEASH YOU USE FOR YOU BULLY/STAFFY/PIT ETC..?
IF SO WHAT TYPE WOULD YOU RECCOMEND?

IS THE COLAR JUST AS IMPORTIANT?

I HAVE A 3/4 INCH WIDE LEATHER COLAR WITH SPIKES ON THE OUTSIDE, WITH A CHAIN LEASH, COULD I DO BETTER?

TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK =)

I don't think it matters so much for a basic collar as long as it's strong enough

Same thing with leashes leather is ideal but they are pretty expensive I use a 4 ft nylon leash and it works fine. The main thing is the strength and you don't want it to be to long so you can keep control

What type of leash would *I* use? One that doesn't perpetuate the myth of a pit bull or American Bulldog being a mean aggressive breed. I tend to stay away from anything with spikes and chains.

Owning a bully breed, I would recommend a heavy duty collar, being that they are very strong and can pull through most anything when determined.

As for the leash, something strong enough to with stand the dog, and comfortable for you.

ETA, I just noticed you had a 3/4" collar. How old is your baby?

We use a nylon collar and leash with Haus. Just basic black. The collar is 2" wide and it's held up for a good long while(almost a year and a half.) The leash we've had since he was a pup. It's just a 5' leash. I would stay away from any retractable leash, as those can break easily.

We also use a prong collar for Haus to curb his pulling.

Here's the collar:

ETA: I wouldn't suggest a 2" collar for every dog. Haus also has a 1" collar that he wears from time to time.

i use break away collars. i have heard horror stories of dogs getting their collars caugt on drawer pulls or cupboards and choking to death. for their leash, i use a lead. it is what the breeder sent us home with, so we have stuck with it.

even the little bullys can be very strong....walking Baylee this morning proved that. i thought she fell down a man hole behind me when all of sudden the leash pulled tight. i pulled a couple times and still nothing, i turn around and she's got herself planted into the driveway.... she wouldn't budge

You asked if you could do better.... Yes, you could do better.

There is no need for spikes on his collar, there is no need for a chain. I'll give you reasons...

You own a pit bull, right? Why add to the fuel of people's fears, and give him a tough appearance? Ego issues? Inferiority complex? I mentally laugh at the ignorance of people that show up in a pet store or dog park with a spiked collar on their bully breed, and then cry when they aren't welcome in public places.

As for the chain... how do you plan on taking control of your dog when he lunges at another? Letting a chain cut up your hand by grabbing onto the leash? Please.

Be an advocate of bully breeds, and get a purple paisley collar, a collar with his name on it, a neon green collar.. but no spikes. Get a nylon or leather leash (leather without studs, tassles or any 'biker' gear on it) You can grab the leash without injuring yourself, and you will be able to control your dog.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to get a new dual colored leash for Atti through collarmania (the color suggestions reminded me). :)

I remember this way back when I posted about leashes and collars. I completely agree with you, put the spiked collars on the poodles and the Chihuahua’s at least they will get a laugh.

Flexi makes a Giant all belt retractable leash which is supposed to be very strong. I agree that the cheaper retractables aren't recommended. The only down fall is they are large and a bit heavy to carry.

I don't like retractable leashes at all. What if the lock on it breaks when your dog goes to pull? They make work for some owners, I just think they are an accident waiting to happen.

I agree - I hate seeing those things. Besides, I like having my dog right next to me when I walk. Xena being in front of me is just asking for trouble. It broke my heart to see someone not too long ago using one of those things on the sidewalk and the dog veering out into the street and getting hit.

That's awful! :( Poor dog!

My old roommate walked her lab mix on one of those retractable leashes and it snapped while they were walking. Took her 3 hours to catch the dog afterwards.

I prefer Haus walking next to me, but I will admit sometimes I let him out in front of me if there are no other dogs out. As soon as I see a person or dog, he goes back to walking next to me with just enough leash to keep him there.

I used to use retractable leashes, and still have one for Messiah. But, for Montana and Mosley, I now use 12" training leads. Easier to control having them right at my sides...I walk Montana and Mosley together and Erica walks Messiah.

Both my dogs currently wear standard (ugly) nylon collars and we walk them on four feet nylon leashes. I am going to invest in a few foot long traffic leads, as I've heard they are excellent for curbing the pulling. They also wear prong collars on our walks until they learn how to walk politely.

leashes...............A strong leash nylon or leather works great. i think that a chain is useless for any breed if something happens and you have to grab the leash it will rip your hands up and mostly likely loose control of your dog.

collars...............I like the kind with a buckle the ones that have a snap scare me. Tora proved that she could pop out of those at 5 months old  . I know that some people use the ones that break away in case of choking and I respect that but I just fear another pop out incident.

As for to spike or not to spike that is your personal choice and taste. At this stage in the game I don't think that it would matter if we dressed our dogs in pink tutus and pastel fairy dust people are going to think what they will. I like the look of spikes my Chihuahua has a spiked collar but I can not stand it when people put those HUGE spikes on their dogs it just looks ridiculous to me.

I'm gonna hijack this thread for just a moment... Those of you who say don't put spikes on bully breeds: What about studs? The collars that have diamond or other shaped metal pieces imbedded in the leather, but that aren't spikes. Do you think those give a bad image? Kind of like the collar Tora is wearing in Angie's banner.

I use a 6 foot leather leash...leather is very good on the hands and will rarely be able to be pulled through your hands, nylon leashes can give you rope burn, I chose 6 feet because shorter leashes encourage pulling.

I walk my dog on a flat nylon collar or a small properly fitted prong depending on the situation

I don't use a retractable leash personally, I was just pointing out that if you do the Flexi one is the best. It's German engineering which in my experience is the best. I haven't bought one yet do to the price. I would only use it in a field, not when I was walking down the street (I would lock it). I still use the nylon leash and collar and haven't had any problems with strength or hurting my hands. I have owned cheaper retractable in the past and I agree they can snap. Many people buy them for the length not considering the strength or dog's weight. Also like a standard leash if they get worn they will weaken, time to buy a new one.
