ok everyone soooo i finally decided to get off my lazy butt and do something with my dog...i contacted a local club here in ohio and they told me to first start by getting basic ob done which is fine, she then said she has a class every mon. starting at the end of june that runs 6 weeks (kash will be 5 months then) so my delemma is should i take that ob class since its held at the club i'll be looking to join or stick to the dog bootcamp 2 Week course i had planned to drop him off to next saturday...let me know which will be more benifical in the long run thanks eric

yes i believe this also but they are both baqsic ob classes....the first choice is---go to classes at the actual club i will be attending once a week for 6 weeks.....or--send kash to boot camp for two weeks to be trained...and then pick him up and they train me to control him with commands he's learned....which seems best they both are clubs that do shutzhund work which is what i look to do soon its just one(the one i want to join) is the first described and the second is the boot camp type

Does your dog have any insane behavioral issues? Are you planning on him being a working dog of one sort or another?

If not then doggy boot camp is not only overkill, but it is sheer laziness on your part. Having a well trained dog has more to do with relationship than it does the outside training they can receive.

ok... i completley understand... thanks for the info, to answer your questions no he does not have any extreme behaviorial issues he is actually pretty good especially round strangers...shy and alert of people at first but then settles right in, more on the ob side of things i have taught him basic and i mean basic stuff so far...like sit (working on stay) i have used a method found on this forum for the recall and he is making progress. some other minor things also but he needs some sort of formal ob...second ?...yes i plan on doing some sort of work and am looking to get good OB foundation and control. so that being said is 4 months/5 months old to old to start ob traing and other work such as shutzhund?

The last thing you should be considering doing is sending you dog off to be trained by someone else. The bond YOU have with your dog is very important and sending him off to be trained by someone else is not only lazy but very much counterproductive.

Has your dog been evaluated by the Schutzhund club yet? Be prepared that most bull breeds do NOT bring to the table the necessary characteristics to make sport dogs. Not trying to rain on your parade, but rather make you aware of that possibility.

Are YOU prepared for the commitment the sport of Schutzhund brings? How much time are you willing to invest in the training? I actually find it odd the club is asking you to do basic ob first. Usually when someone comes to a sport club without any previous experience, any ob "training" they have done usually has to be all re done and corrected anyways. Perhaps they are trying to see how badly you want to join by making it a pre requisite that you attend ob classes first? That's the only thing I can think of. I think a lot of sport club get people on a regular basis who "say" they want to join and train their dogs, but once they realize the responsibility and commitment, they fall off the radar screen. A lot only want to come out so they can do bitework but don't spend much time on the other 2 phases. Maybe this is their way of evaluating your commitment level?

Is the ob class this club puts on geared towards people who have sport training in mind or is it more basic ob for pet owners? Does the club have a website?

yes i am fully aware of all the pre work "evaluations" i am MOSTLY looking for good ob work so if they can provide that ob and control i am looking for i will be happy so passing and getting into bite work and this and that is least of my concerns (i need him to obey and be under control at home let alone a club) he is a pet and that is all i dont intend on breeding or any thing else that comes along with doing shu. work just interested in it. lisa you brought up a good point about the training and i will take your advice along with other that have mentioned it and take him AND me to be trained :0). to answer your question no he has not i called and this is how the convo went...me: hi im interested in your club and seeing if you are taking new members?...lady: have you ever trained a dog?..me:no...lady:what kind of dog is it?...american bulldog...lady:eek:k well first you need to have basic ob done and we offer that here we have this class starting.....etc etc.... she only trains 6 dogs at a time for more quality training....then she say "he will go through my ob class and after the 6 weeks we will bring him in for some other class (forget what she called it) and at that point if he passes he will be admitted in the club for training towards being titled....now that is not her exact words but you get the idea. and trust me your not raining on my parade i love your comments and knowledge..i am fully prepared for him NOT doing this type work, i can live with just doing ob....im just trying to find the best OB out there and attend confirmation shows and such...if he is good at the other two phases then so be it.

yes i am fully prepared to be committed to the training at and away from the club.im willing to invest as much time as needed
i think this may be the way of evaluating their members, so should i call back and ask more/different ?'s if so whats some good ones to ask?
i dont know if this OB is geared towards pet owners or people looking to work there dogs but i told her what my goals where and that is what she suggested......but that is a goog question because i was telling my wife that it made no since for them to tell me to have OB training done when they are 2 totally diff. types of OB....

http://www.germandogs.com/lindesfarne.htm is the website...i got it off the sticky on this forum

Good luck with your training. He is a handsome man! My boy Juneau also had some shy issues. He has overcome them with the confidence he has gained through obedience and agility. Let us know how it goes!

Dynasty's_Kash...

One of our club members has trained and trialed at that club quite a few times. She has said some good things about them! Good luck with the evaluation. Let us know how it goes.

well...he did ok yesterday..I was invited back sunday they want to do another evaluation..so don't know if that's good or bad but lisa I can see why good things have been said they are good people..and I got to watch some dogs (mostly german shepards) work and train...awsome awsome stuff look forward to going back

I would just be worried that they are trying to get you to take the Ob classes with no intentions of having you in the club. I live not to far from you and the one club i know of in southern OH in the Akron area I am not a fan of the club. They don't like American Bulldogs in there club.

With that being said I still wish you luck and hope that it all works out for you!
