Hi everyone, my name is James and I'm just getting into a new home. I've been doing research on English Bulldogs, as I've always wanted one, and a friend (Cinder) referred me to this message board. I was dead set on going the EB route but after reading about some of the sensitivity issues, I'm leaning towards an OEB. I have a pretty laid back lifestyle (perfect for an EB) but I do like to spend weekends at the river (swimming/100 degree temps) and the desert (cold nights/windy days) and don't think an EB would be able to handle it. Basically I'm here to learn all I can as I know for sure that I'll get some kind of Bulldog.

Hey James, I'm new here too. I have an OEB. His name is Chuck and he's 8 months old. He loves water. He can also get overheated so I'd be careful in the 100 degree heat.
My nephew has a EB. His EB is about a year old so not much older than my OEB. I can tell you that my OEB is a lot more active than his EB.
I think you're on the right track going with the OEB.

I can't speak for all breeds, but I do know that my AB tends to overheat, and the vet advised us he could die if out in temps like that doing prolonged things. I think if you take the PROPER precautions (not over working them, recognizing when they are too hot), you're ok.

Welcome!!!

EB'S are awesome dogs as are OEB's but they both overheat the same.... 100+ heat isnt recommended for most bulldogs..even if your pup will be standing in water lounging the overall heat and humidty can reap havok on the dog... now if your going to the river and are bringing a trailer or motorhome that has A/C that you can leave on constantly then awesome.. sort spurts outside during day are ok but trust me.. Mason overheats when it's 86-90 degrees outside and he is not even that bulky....

I wouldnt let it stray you away just do some thinking and do your homework and decide whether you can accomodate a EB's temperature needs... Evening time at the river might not be bad just keep fresh cold water on hand all day... Good luck on your hunt for a pup!!

Good info, thanks. My friend has an air conditioned trailer and we'd be able to have him cool off there. He wouldn't have to be in the heat all day, just an hour or two on the boat and then we could call it a day if he gets too hot. I wouldn't want him to be around all of the drunks at the sandbar anyway.

welcome!
well ive one EB who is always up to running and being active and the other one is active, but gets tired quickly. heat is the problem - i have learned to be cautious (water bottle if out for a longer time etc.). They dont mind cold weather and one of mine loves water. Ive always wanted an EB and thought they were couch potatoes - so wrong  Also there are different types of EB - like the short stocky ones small head, the long lean body ones (these do seem to be more active and athletic (Im generalazing and its just what ive noticed but that's just to show that they all arent the same).

My brother's EB is amazingly active and athletic, but he's the exception. They live in the heat and humidity of the Washington, DC area so they have to be careful with him in the summer.
Have you considered an RB? They seem to be a really athletic and healthy breed.

welcome!!!!!! Glad to see you are being smart about about your choice in pups ( can't say that about your friends   Cinder)

I don't know if you have looked into them or not but Most of the APBT's i know handle the heat pretty good .
My boy Titan 2 weeks ago didn't want to come in & we were at about 100

I am considering an RB now after doing more research, they seem like another good option.

Nothing against them but I'm not really looking at the APBT as I raised a red nose that we found lost on the street. He was a sweet dog but he was dumb as rocks.

I know not all are like that, but I think I want something with a little less energy and a little more personality(again nothing against the breed).

Kick his ass, sea bass!!!

What about an AB? Too big for you?

Quite honestly, I think you will find EVERY answer and then some on here.

I was like most...got a dog, joined, then realized that who I purchased from was more than likely a BYB (backyard breeder) and that breeding my dog was NOT cool!

Because of this I have a kick ass dog, who is learning by the day (b/c of folks here), has a top notch diet, a top notch coat and (working on) top notch manners.

And also, b/c of this, I know to pass on information to friends like you about what breeders to trust and purchase from. :)

(Do I still get a cut of the purchase price??) ;)

I had the same concerns as you regarding EB'S. Thats why I went with OEB as well, I don't pick up my OEB pup till the 17th of July. The wait is killing me, I'm glad that the seller sends me update pics every cople of days to see his progression.
