Juice @ 18mos and 90lbs still has not proven himself reliable to roam the house when I leave or overnight....It's not that he soils I've been blessed with housebreaking he just finds things to get into. I also have a 12yr old mix breed (female) that he has been humping addictively..I'm aware he will begin asserting his dominance more as he matures..I guest my question would be... has anyone else experienced the slow transiton from crate to freedom

Titan is 2+ years old but he is crated when we are not home ...for his safety & my peace of mind ...always will be & having another dog you are best to crate anyway as you can never be sure what you MAY come home to safe is better than sorry in my world everytime

It depends upon the dogs, and the owners I suppose. Some people never go without the crates, some do allow freedom. With an older dog still around I would probably lean towards keeping the dogs crated (separated) when they cannot be directly supervised.

Is Juice neutered yet?

My Pug had free run of the house at 7 months. She hasn't ever gotten into anything, isn't a chewer and housebreaking went great. I leave my mastiffs for 1 hour sometimes and they are ok.....however I wouldn't yet trust they wouldn't rip my couch apart if alone for an extended period. They are 9 months.

I would crate when there are two dogs just to be on the safe side. You wouldn't be able to forgive yourself if something bad was to happen. I know it doesn't seem fair but I only crate Zero when I leave, Zeus is very trustworthy and Zero is always the instigator. Zero will go in on his own to sleep when the door is open so I know he feels comfortable in it.

+1!

All of my dogs are crated when we're away. I'm more concerned for their safety than their freedom.

Dylan is 2 years old and is crated when I am not home. I'd just rather not risk him getting into something and getting obstructed.
Plus, he just sleeps all day anyway so it works for both of us.

Since Nitro;s 10 months he s loose at night and he s a good boy with my other 2..so far he hasn t eaten anything...he steal though..thats funny....
but when i leave the house he is crated...noway i m going to leave my 3 dogs loose...

Igloo & Tiger there s no problem but Nitro don t trust him yet...

Thanks for the insight..to answer the question regarding being neutured...I owe a breeding to the Kennel and my plan is to work him a bit hopefully earn a title or two then stud him out for a couple years...my 12yr old female has been crate free for the last 11yrs..my hope would be that Juice will become reliable as he matures..part of my motivation in sharing my life with the AB was to protect the house
