Hi :) Trying to figure out if Eng. Bulldogs are right for us?!

Hi All -

I am trying to figure out if the English Bulldog is right for us, I am hoping you guys can help. :)
I'm a full time stay at home mom to a 2yr old, I also have a 10month old Great Dane who is fantastic with all animals and people.

What are the PROS & CONS of this breed?
What are COMMON health problems you see with BD's?

I've read they are an even tempered breed who are Intelligent which in turn can make them hard headed at times. I know they snore & are mesy eaters/drinkers but our dane slobbers after eating to - We just wipe his face after eating to help prevent Acne/Sores. So its no big deal to us.

How do your Bulldogs Welcome Strangers at the door? In your home?
Our Dane will bark to alert us someone is outside/at the door, but welcomes anyone and everyone into our home as long as they pet him LOL

What else can you tell me about the Breed that I might not learn from just reading Information on websites. I feel I can learn a lot more from many different BD owners then just reading bulldog informative websites.

Thanks! Looking forward to meeting you all and learning more about Bulldogs!

Welcome to the forum! You are going to get a vast range of opinions here when it comes to the English Bulldog. I am an English bulldog lover so I will give you the pros and also some of the issues we have had with Duke.

They are an incredible loving breed. Our EB is very well trained ( thanks to some of the great advice I have learned on this site) . he is by no means a couch potatoe , he takes a good 30-40 minute walk once a day and on the weekends sometimes more. In the summer time we do cut his walks back a bit and we walk him early in the am before it gets too hot to avoid overheating. he loves to play and is excellent with and loves children. he is the KING of our neighborhood. we can't walk to the park without people stopping to give Duke some love ha ha

We have had two main issues with Duke. He had surgery on his eyes when he was about 1 1/2 years old.He had entropian which is caused by so many wrinkles. He developed an ulcer so this surgery was needed so it did not re-occur.He also suffers with allergies. He is allergic to wool. we are in the process of giving him allergy shots now and hopefully this will help. he does not have any breathing issues and funny enough Duke does not snore? :tongue9:
if you go through the forum you will find excellent threads on how to choose a good breeder. I think this is crucial when purchasing any dog. ( especially an English bulldog) you want to make sure you get all the health records on both parents as well.

I hope that helps you somewhat .. I guess it is a personal preference. they are expensive and I would recommend pet insurance. We use Pet Insurance for Dogs and Cats - Petplan Pet Health Insurance and have been reimbursed for most of our medical bills.

Best of Luck with your decision and welcome again! ;)
