How did you choose your dog's name?

The shelter called her- Naomi. But it reminded me of the model - so I just shorted it to Omi. (pronounced oh-me)
Although she responds to Baby Girl, Lardo, Itchy, Stinky & any kind of whistle or kissy noise.

When we named our EB we gave it a lot of thought and want to give him great name. We had lots of names picked out but none seemed to fit. Two events led to our choice for the puppy's name.

Event 1: Our favorite Uncle passed away, and Uncle Dude was the coolest 87 year man I ever knew and was full blood Cherokee. Uncle Dude, real name Walter, had a statue of an EB in his home and all the kids loved to talk about it.

Event 2: At a family gathering of Pam's family we asked the people in the kitchen that day what would be a good name for our puppy. Only Pam's niece replied, "Angus, what a fine Scottish name for an English dog". I loved it since both Pam and I are Cherokee with Scottish heritage.

So our puppy was named that day, Sir Walter Angus. Angus lives up to his name by being as as much fun as Uncle Dude and as bullheaded as a Scotsman.

Ike was name by my husband after Dwight D Eisenhower as part of a deal we made. I got to pick the pup, he got to name him. Took him 3 days lol.

Rita was named Princess by my brother when we got her. My husband and I both thought the name silly as she isn't a pretty princess type at all. She's more lovey and tough and practical than that! So, we went looking for a more simple name. The hubby strikes again and plays the Beatles song "Lovely Rita" off the Sgt Peppers album. The song had a kinda bully walk rhythm to the beat, so we named her Rita.

The cat we named after the hubby since they both howl like they're dying when they're hungry. His name is Marty-Kitty.

The Eastern Box Turtle we named Mr Chang after a favorite sci-fi book character.

The Cockatiel we got from my borther and her name wsa Psycho. We renamed her Lulu because the boy child wanted to name her Talula and I suggested Lulu might be better. :)

Initially my then boyfriend and I had thought we wanted a male EB, and we ran through a thousand names, nothing was right. I think I made the comment about the dogs being like trucks- like Tonka trucks- and bam- we knew we'd found the name.
We ended up with a little girl, my baby :) And decided to keep the name but change the spelling- somehow thinking the 'A' would be more feminine... So she became Tanka with the same pronunciation.
She became Tanka Jane because the names sound like Danke Schoen- the song. I started it and while initially he was like what are you doing? He's called her that too...
She is also my Snuggie (I called her that before I had heard of the stupid blanket), my SNooogie, Snuggles, Snugglupogus, Snuggs, Snugg face, Chunk-a-doo, Chunky Brewster, Beautiful, etc etc etc. She was, and is sometimes still, very snuggly and cuddly. Hence the vast majority of nicknames

Ours was named Dunkin-due to the fact that my 5 yr old has to have a Dunkin Donut fix on Saturdays..it just seemed to fit better then all of the prissy pants lil girlie names she WAS suggesting....i think Tinkerbell was the leader of the name list at that time..but we got him at 25lbs 3mths old..he just didnt strike me as a Tinkerbell...Now he is "the dunkster", "dunky-doodle", "Dunkie", "Monkey", "Dunka-roo", "dunko"...Its funny now that I list them all, how many nicknames we come up for our pets. isnt it?

We have 3 dogs at the moment. Our oldest dog is an American Rat Terrier. Our daughter was 9yrs old at the time we got him and she wanted to name him. He loved to dig into his blanket and in the yard so she named him "Digger". Our next dog had the coloring and appearance of a hyena when she was a pup so she got named "Ena".(Ena the hyena). Lastly we got our OEB pup. He is built like a brick sh*t house and is brick red in color so he got tagged with the name "Brick".

Jon and I like the band Dropkick Murphy and a particular song "The Dirty Glass". We just think the name fit well. I get lots of compliments on it and it seems to be a popular name. I know 2 people that named their dog that before I even got Murphy.

my family watches survivor on cbs religiously and theres a contestant on there named rupert. hes our favorite. if you look at him, he just looks like a bull breed haha. so when we got rupert, i just knew he was gonna be stuck with that name

Yeah - I wondered if that's who he was named after. We ALMOST named Sulley "Sawyer" after Sawyer from the show "Lost" but Sulley seemed more innocent and playful, and we all know how dogs can live up to their names sometimes......I wanted to make sure it was something I LOVED. ;)

no way! we almost named rupert sawyer too haha. lost is my favorite show, im so sad theres only 3 left :(

When I first saw my dog I wanted to name her Asya, but most people were trying to convince me otherwise.
I wanted something short and rare for my dufus. So here I was seating in front of my TV and remembering that I need to return Kill Bill to Netflix, and that's how Uma was named :)
It is short and rare I think :)

I was talking to a co-worker and her friend just got a EB from a breeder. She named it Tinkerbull :confused:. Ew.

But then I guess they got the papers and the mothers name turned out to be Tinkerbell. Lol. Why they didn't know the mothers name before they got the puppy, idk.

I always name my dogs whatever they remind me of! Macho, well, he just looked so Macho to me lol.

We had a dog named Teddy Bear, i swear he looked like a stuffed bear.
