***Just a warning the video is a little disturbing, not visually, just hearing the dogs cries is a little off putting. ***

Basically this incident has cause massive public uproar in my town. What happened was that the swat team served a search warrent and ended up fatally shooting the mans supposed pit bull and also shooting his welsh corgi in front of his wife and 7 year old son. In the end the police never found the pounds of marijuana that the man was suspected of having in his home. Instead they found a pipe with residue, a grinder, and under 35 grams of marijuana. In my town under 35grams is considered a ordinance violation and is handled like a misdomeaneor traffic violation. So the man paid his fine and never went to jail, but was left with one dead dog, his welsh corgi with a shooting wound to the paw and the fact that his wife and 7 year old son witnessed everything. The incident has angeried many here, and the police continue to lie and wash their hands of any wrong doing. I just wanted to get everyone's opinion on this. As a pet owner I feel this is completey wrong and the police cause more harm to the family then the dogs caused them. They seem to have no understanding that the bullets fired could have easily struck the 7 year old child. They have the mentality of shoot first ask questions later. It just makes me sick.

UPDATE: Columbia Police Department still dealing with backlash about SWAT raid - Columbia Missourian

Again I dont want to cause controversy on here, i just want to get everyones opinion, and spread the word about this.

I didn t look at the video i just read what you wrote..

the dam police always had excuses for these situations..it s never there fault..

if the pit didn t attack why kill it..oh yea it s pit:mad::mad: a good excuse..

pisses me off...i swear i d make so much trouble if they killed my dog for nothing..

that poor child will be affected for the rest of his life..he ll never trust the police again..he ll think there idiotes..which they are in this case..

In the state of Missouri, 35 grams of marijuana is a felony. A SWAT team would not preform a raid if they didn't think this guy wasn't a big time drug dealer (or just a drug dealer for that matter).

This is true, but the only reason is that they claimed to have an informant that said this individual had pounds of marijuana days before the raid. They also lied about the timing and other reasons behind the raid. They waited 8 days to serve the warrent.

I thought that I had read somewhere else that the pitbull was crated... was this true?

I'm not positive on that, my understanding is that the pit bull was sectioned off in the kitchen area with some sort of baby gate, and not crated. This is not shown on the video but allegidly they are releasing the still photos of the aftermath soon.

The police claim the dog barked and acted aggresive towards officers before shots were fired. If you watch the video tho, no barking is heard until after the shots and that was the corgi reacting.

Can they not give the owner a chance to put his dog away, i mean the dude surronded by 8 swat members with fully automatic weapons what is he going to do.

Listen a little closer the dog did bark and that is when the police officer started yelling "call the dog off" repeatedly. But I agree that the owner was unable to get to his dog in order to call it off.

I know that I'm going to sound like I'm defending the shooting of this dog but how were the police supposed to know that a baby gate was going to stop a dog from coming after them? The mentality of the police is to just get the bad guy and get home safe to their families. It is sad that the dog was shot and killed.

They just need to work on their intel before conducting these raids. They should have known about the children and pets in the home before they went in. Especially if they do trash grabs and survallience before executing the warrent. Poor management, poor decisions, poor planning all around.

I completely agree!

But around here, not sure if this is true for other areas, conservation officers are allowed to trespass on your property and are able to destroy any animal that can blow their cover. It's wrong in my opinion but it's allowed.

If you want to blame someone - blame the man who was breaking the law and brought the police to the house.

Police officers aren't any better at reading dogs than anybody else.

That was very disturbing, I wish I didn't watch/hear that :( I would end up getting shot if the Police came in my house and killed Zeus, I would totally loose it.
I agree, I'd rather have them shoot me.

The whole swat team and killing the mans dog seems like way overkill for just a little pot.

Again if they thought that he only had a little bit of pot they wouldn't have done the raid. Yes, maybe they should have gotten better info but this guy was probably already known for dealing and he just got lucky only having that in his house.

These cops would not survive in NY.
As far as getting more info - most times the info is based from informants - informants are "crack heads" that instead of getting jail time, snitch. They in turn get paid & go to a different area to buy their drugs.

For these guys to fire their guns while innocents are in the apt. - they would have a lot of explaining to do. Of all the years my husbands been in narcotics - they've only shot a dog once. The dog charged them and wasnt stopping.
He said in most cases the dogs bark - but only because they are startled. They dont charge. They're too scared. They are pets.

It's in those few seconds that determine if a cop has what it takes to be a cop. If they cant remain calm under pressure - they need to rethink their career.

+1.

Sad thing is this happens all the time. There have been many cases recently here in Wisconsin about police shooting dogs that were "vicious" - which were really just barking defending their property not attacking in any way. The worst part is there is no legal recourse for owners - the Wisconsin Supreme Court has ruled you can't sue for someone else (police or neighbor whomever) for shooting your dog - no pain and suffering anyway - some courts let you fight for reimbursement of the cost of your "property loss" since that it all a dog is to the court system. So sad.

That is really sad. The come into a house yelling, screaming and stomping making all kinds of noise and the dogs reacted just the way dogs are supposed to act. It's strange that you never see the dog come out or charge at the police, Budha is at the door whenever somebody just opens my screen door, let alone come barging inl They should have known not only that there was a dog on the premises, but in what area of the house the dog was most likely to be kept. If they didn't know that, what else didn't they know that would have put others and themselves in danger? I think when swat is involved it's plan....this is poor planning in the worst possible way.
