Hello, my name is John.

I adopted my first American Bulldog today. I am fairly new to dogs, so this I am trying to learn as much as possible so this is a good experience for me.

Anyways. He is 2 months old and all white. I did a lot of research online and know that raising a puppy right is very important. Right now he is extremely playful and just very fun to watch. He does nip and bite a bit, which I read is pretty normal, and I have been making eye contact and yelling NO. I have read a few different ways to go about this but will take any advice given here, I do not want a biter.

Also every once and a while he will growl/bark at me when I am not playing with him and I am guessing he is in a playing mood. He stops once i throw him a toy or play tug of war with a rope. Is this normal?

I am going to go through the forums and see if I can pick out any threads that can help me on my way, and again, any advice is welcome :)

Hi John!

I´m enjoying your pic.... is like seeing my "Lajana" in a mirrow. Like twins!! =)
She is my first dog and I am doing my best to race her. She will start a puppy training course next month because she bites my hands a lot and need to controle her. If you see my hands would you think that I was fighting with a cat, haha

I wasnt 100% sure that my puppy is a 100% american bulldog, because her nose and mouth are not 100% black... started with pink and the black color was appering with the days but not all. Maybe its comming with the time...... Im worry now because she looks really sick doesnt want to eat or drink anything. We live in Sweden.. and is summer now, maybe is because of it? I will take her to the vet on monday... now is everything close... Good luck with your sweety!!

She is lajana =)

I got Bella at 18 months or so, so she was already past the biting stage. Whatever taught her was perfect, because you can't get her to play bite, even if you stick your hand in her mouth. The only advice I can give is to be consistent. Whatever method you choose, do it the same EVERY time.

Best of luck with new pup. He's great looking.

Thank you for the replies/advice :).

After just a day he seems to be getting better. His house training is going well and has only had one incident today.

He still will nip every now and then when playing but will usually pull himself back on his own or when I say "No" and point.

Here is a picture of him sleeping, very hard to get a good shot of him sitting still!

The nipping will end, but be prepared some dogs will still play bite if you rough play. Harley will only play bite (mouthing) me and no one else in the family. This is my fault because I rough house with her and she plays with me as if I was another dog. With good consistant training your dog will stop the nipping. Welcome to the board and enjoy your new friend.

Thanks for all the comments, he really is a great puppy and want him to be raised to be that way. I am having a few issues.

First off, when playing he can get very excited and when the toy is in my hand he will sometimes go for the hand rather than the toy (which is plenty big enough for him to). When i say NO he puts his head back and lunges right back at my hand. This will go on and on and I do not know what to do. Right now I am trying to keep him in the bathroom for 10 minutes after he bit me and I had to say NO more than once.

Also when taking him for walks (right now in the back yard as I dont think he is ready to go out for a real walk) he will constantly grab the leash and try to pull it, I am guessing to play. Also he will go for my feet when I walk and lie down and dig or bite the grass instead of keeping up with me. Is he just to young? Or should I be doing something to encourage him to stay with me or discourage him from not staying with me...

Thanks again!

OH he is such a cutie pie!!! Makes me want another one!
I would first go to the sticky station on this forum and read up. There is a lot of good info in there.
1st, you always control the level of play. If my pup starts going total spazz out or biting me instead of the toy it's NO BITE! and to her time out pen (same thing you are doing with the bathroom)
2nd IMO they are never too young to learn to heel. If he bites the leash I would correct him like you would if he picked up anything else he's not supposed to. Maybe a firm LEAVE IT! would work. Also, get a leather leash not a nylon one as they can get those little puppy teeth stuck right in the nylon making it harder to get his mouth off of it.
Well, good luck! You will get lots more good info from everyone here!

Beautiful puppy! I just got my 2nd American Bulldog this weekend and he is also 2 months old. They are truly great and smart dogs, with a proper raising you will see for yourself how good of a dog they are! Mine at two months already knows to stop when i give him a sturdy no, as for the nipping say no and offer them a chew toy. This is only for the teething period they will grow over it.
