I am so terribly sorry to read about your sweet dog. I have a very similar story regarding our OEB Rufus who had to be euthanized 4 years ago. We owned both Rufus and his sister Avery from the time they were 8 weeks old. Rufus had his first grand mal seizure at the age of 9 months. They were terrible events: Afterward he would be blind and confused for about 30 minutes and would growl at us because he was scared and didn't know what was happening. He was on phenobarb at escalating doses his whole life and finally in the last year (he lived 6 years) he was on both phenobarb and potassium bromide and the seizures just became worse. Then he started falling down and his hips became unstable. I had to pick him his hind end off the floor several times when I was 9 mo pregnant and he weighed 105 lbs. My husband had a very, very hard time since he was "his boy" and hung on too long, probably. When poor Rufus fell down the stairs, I said he had to take him in. It turns out he was in liver failure from so many years on the phenobarb...although those were mostly good years since he stayed moderately controlled with his meds. So we got him a big steak, took him swimming to the beach one last time and then my husband took him in. Very, very, very hard. So I want to tell you that I am so sorry for your loss. It's the last thing we can do for our best friends. We have to bear the pain in the end so they don't have to. You did the right thing.
Once I read something in a dog book that said it's hard when we have to say good bye to our old failthful friend. But when you are ready, there is a puppy (or older dog too, for that matter) waiting. Take care.
