Hello,
I apologize for posting yet another food'/poop question but we seem to be still struggling getting Wally's stomach under control. He is currently 4 months old.
Since we've had him, he's had an upset stomach and rather soft poops. Over the last month we slowly switched him from Diamond Natural to Orijen Puppy and he's been on just Orijen with some rice mixed in for the last couple of weeks. His poops are still very soft and may actually be getting worse. We didn't give him rice with one meal and it got even worse so he's back on rice with the Orijen. This weekend for the first time since we basically got him he had an accident in the house and then another one this morning. I'm starting to think that the Orijen is just too rich for him and am thinking of switching him to something a bit more mild with grains. How much more time should I give him to adjust to the Orijen? He's been to the vet and it's not a parasite or anything so it must just be the food.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance as always.

I usually say 30 days to see if bowels change. if he is still runny I am not sure? Have you tried adding some canned pumpkin to his food? ( two tablespoons).. Duke would get soft poops also if food did not agree. We finally had him on DVP duck and potatoe and that worked well. ( it took a good month though to get adjusted )..

and don't apologize that's what we are here for .. to help each other ;)

Thanks for the info. My concern was that we were not giving it enough time before switching and would just keep having issues if we keep switching. You've kind of helped confirm this. I think we'll give it a few more weeks before giving up.
Thanks again!

I am gong to say that if you have had problems and changed his food and are
still having problems, take him to another vet before he becomes malnourished.
Before doing this, have you tried canned pumpkin and yogurt to help settle
his system? If you have then take him to another vet.

It may be overfeeding. We were giving him about 1.75 cups a day but recently increased it to around 2.25. He looks fine. Definitely not fat but he's not putting on weight like he was. I guess he's about 22lbs now at 16 weeks.

Bauer since he was a pup always had sensitive stomach issues. He had loose poop for the first 6 months of his life.. not runny.. but soft and not formed like I wanted them. I tried medication.. made sure he was on good food.

Then when he was about 8 months.. I put him on Raw.. and his poop was amazing after that! He had the best poops ever!

Then it got to much for the raw.. so I put him back on Orijen.. loose poops.. then put him on Acana.. still grain free.. and his poops are great!

Thanks. I've heard very good things about Acana and your description of Bauers poops sound just like Wally's. I think this will be our next step. Again it's not diarrhea, its just soft. Thanks for the info. I think that Orijen might be just too much for some dogs.

oh i feel ya brother... Samson had a case of the poops for the fist month and a half when we had him. Tested him for parasites twice and nothing. No worms, anything. I had him on Summit lamb and rice for about a month before i figured the food was too rich for his stomach. I tried the rice and yogourt diet... but by this time i think he had an infection in his intestinal track...Got some antibiotics from the doc and hes been on perscription food for about a month and a half. The DRY perscription food seemed to do the trick. The ingredients seem horrible tho, its Purina Gastroingestional(SP) and it has a lot of grians. Sometimes i think if they arent allergic...they might need the grains to stiffin up their poop. thats no expert opinion tho. I plan to keep samson on the perscription food for another 2 weeks before making the switch to DVP duck and potato. I try to stay on a food for 2 months.

My pup was the same as Bauer and Wally - loose poop! I went to acana Pacifica and all is well. I think orijen is sometimes too rich for the little ones. Make sure to use the pumpkin and/or rice in the transition. make sure you go super slow in the switch. Goodluck, that was a huge pain to figure out! Acana is a good choice, hope it gets better!

Dogs don't need grains to stiffen up their poop.

some pups just cant handle rich food, the foods you are switching him to are very rich, and probably are too rich for his system, i would slowly go to a middle of the road not as rich food and try that, switching foods should be gradual over the course of 2 weeks , with adding a little bit of the new food to the old and slowly transitioning the old food out as you add the new food.. canidae, merrick, purina one, natural balance , are all middle foods that are not as rich as what you are trying. adding plain cooked white rice or a teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin(not the filling) will help firm up his poops while you transition him over. the more you switch foods the more your pup will have the runs. what was he eating before you got him and was his stools solid on that food? if so, then go to what he was eating before you got him and keep him on that
