Hi, my family and I just rescued a wonderful, dog from our local shelter. They said she is an american pit bull. She has a wonderful disposition, she is awsome with our four daughters ranging in age from 8yrs to 4 months old. We have been looking at pictures to try to figure out exactly what bull breed or mix she is. She is 43lbs, 19 inches to the shoulder, about a year old. She plays with reckless abandon, most times comming in from the yard with scratches on legs and chest from running through the bushes. We were wondering if anyone could tell what mix she might be by her picture, and give us any advise on off leash training, she is wonderful on the leash, but off she gets alittle distracted and does not listen at first. ( She will only be off leash on private property, surrounded by woods)

Looks like a pit mix to me, but I think 90% of shelter dogs are pit mixes! :) She's a doll. I can't advise on leash training because I haven't worked with my own dogs enough. Let us know how things work out for you!

Off Leash

Morning!
I'm no expert, but when I work with Harley off leash, I always stress recall first. I crouch low and call lovingly to her. When she comes, I don't food reward her, but do praise her lavishly. To me, having your dog come when called, every time, is the most important step. She's doing great by the way. At the end of 2 months, I could bring her to my in-laws (they have 2 unfenced acres, also surrounded by woods) and keep her in my boundries reliably. Yeah Harley! I've also read it's a good idea to work outside with distractions on leash first, to make sure she understands she MUST listen. The part I'm unclear about is what to do when your dog doesn't WANT to listen. For instance, Harley know exactly what down means, but she doesn't want to do it when told. Should I force her to comply?
