At what age do you neuter your dog? My vet reccomends 6-8 months. I have done a lot of reading recently that the Humane Society and other vets are doing it younger and younger. They claim that the 6 mo rule is arbitrary and that the younger the pup, the easier the recovery period. Also, what is the average cost? My vet quoted $250.00 if he is over 50# at 6 mos. I was thinking of going through the Friends of Animals and getting a certificate for $64.00, but I would have to use a different vet.

My vet said anywhere between 4-6 months of age. We had Shadow neutered when he was 4 months old, our vet said everything would be okay if we did since both testicles had dropped.

We got him neutered and he never had any problems, and he didn't even seem phased by the fact that he was drugged

But I'm not exactly sure how much Shadow's neuter cost us.

We only got Chapps when he was around 7 months so we got him done at 8 months.
Because he is a rescue, I got a special rate of $60.00! I was very thankful to that.

Mind you, getting Holly spayed at 9 months, it was $220.

Patch is booked in to get it done next week, and he'll be 7 months.
His testicles had dropped months ago... and the vet won't do it before 6 months.

SOOOOO scared though.

and it's costing me AU$180, which is equivalent to about US$120.... so comparing to how much you guys are paying, it's a bargain!!

Recent studies have shown that, thanks to advances in anesthesia (the newer Isofluorane is much safer than that of olden days), male dogs suffer no ill effects from being neutered as young as 8 weeks of age. However, females spayed younger than 12 weeks showed a higher risk of developing UTIs (& recurring UTIs) & urinary incontinenece. It is recommended to wait until a female is 12 weeks of age to spay.

I just got my bully neutered at 6 months, didn't seem to phase him much. My vet also will not neuter under 6months... especially for an English Bully because they don't like to put them under that young due to their breathing... But it barely slowed him down for even the night after the surgery ~lol. He's so tough...

Just got Gus neutered at 16 weeks, and he was fine, he had already started trying to "hump" the mini schnauzer next door and she is in heat. I figured that i'd better get it done. I really didn't see a point in waiting, he was running around by the end of the night. It was $95 for the operation plus around $20 for anesthesia and staying over for the day.

Jesse James was nuetered at 4 months... it only cost us $65 because we got a hundred dollars off with a voucher from the dog pound (another perk of adopting! )
