Am I being set up by this breeder.........

So as most of you know I have been looking into getting male AB pup. After about a month I found a lady who
lives 7 hours from me and has been breeding for time.I did a background check on her with the better burro business and it came back clean.I have seen pictures of past litters and there owners. She has an area on her site with the pedigrees/sire
and what not and seems to be on top her game.Well she had said that her female was due to give birth this month and if I was interested I had to put down my deposit so I could be on the waiting list for one.so I sent my deposit and got an email that they were hoping she would have them any day now.Well I hadn't heard anything from her so I sent her an email asking how the mom was doing and if there was any signs she would be having the litter soon.I then get an email back saying that she is taking mommy to the vet Tuesday and would let me know what is said.So last night I get a call from her saying she took the mother to the vet and the vet had said she had a False pregnancy.I have heard of this before BUT it threw up the red flag. She said she had never heard or seen this before. She was very apologetic and said that her other female was due to go into heat soon and if I was still interested that she would give me first pick of the litter.I told her I would get back to her.The red flag is: is it possible for a dog to have a false pregnancy and her not realize it the whole time? She said she was producing milk towards the end that her temp dropped a day or two before she took her to the vet and she put on weight like she was in fact going to have pups. She does have I believe two pups in her house with this female who has had litters before.I guess my question is does this lady sound like she knows what she is doing? Is it possible for something like this to happen? What are all of your thoughts on this.Should I take my money elsewhere?

Could you post the link to the breeder for me?
Kelly, why are you so set on getting a dog in your local area? The best breeders ship dogs and will stand behind them. Not to be rude but judging from your experience with this other "breeder", it doesn't seem like you did much homework before you put a deposit down. Maybe it would be in your best interest to spend some more time doing homework so you know what questions to ask and you know who the reputable breeders are that are out there. There may be hundreds, if not thousands of AB breeders in the world, but only about 1% would be what I consider "reputable". The chance of a good breeder being in your own back yard is pretty slim.
It is understandable to want to see the parents and puppies in person...I can see people wanting to do that BUT there are breeders out there who can be trusted. The good breeders know what a good temperament is and can stand behind their dogs. Just curious, do you know what NCL is? Do you know how FEW breeders are testing for it?
Ya I guess Google works good. :D . My guess is the breeder with the "false pregnancy" did not do the NCL test, therefore you did NOT do your homework prior to putting down that deposit but please correct me if I am wrong. Who is the breeder? I am not trying to be rude here but I really hate to see people get ripped off by so called breeders who are only breeding for their own selfish reasons ($$$) and unfortunatly that is the category 99% of AB breeders fall under. Even if you buy a puppy from one of these clowns and you are happy with it as a pet, it still irks me to no end that someone profited from your purchase. Please, if you are going to spend money on a puppy, support the right people. People who do the appropriate health tests and know what type of temperament a quality AB should possess. There are some good breeders out there you just need to find out who they are.
BTW, Kelly, I just re read your original post. The BBB is not the place to find out if a breeder is reputable or not.
The problem with these breeder directories is that unless you know what to look for they are usless. Anyone can list themselves in there, it doesn't mean they are repuatable, it just means they are putting dogs together and selling puppies.
That's cool Kelly, as long as the people sending you the links know what to look for in a reputable breeder then you should be all set. Have you considered checking out some other forums where there are more poeple who work their AB"s? I know it sounds like you are just looking for a pet but the reason I ask is because generally speaking, the working AB people usually have much higher standards when it comes to health testing, and temperament. Just a thought, and if you want I could point you in the direction of a few good breeders I would recommend, but most of them would not be within a days drive of you.
