You can register an AKC AmStaff as a UKC APBT (if you had registered it with the AKC first), but you can't register a UKC APBT as an AKC AmStaff if you had registered with the UKC first. I think that's how it works; someone can correct me if I'm wrong! So, the UKC considers them the same breed, but the AKC doesn't.

I think your right they are the same thing to me.
I tend to think of APBTs as being bred for performance and AmStaffs as being bred for looks (conformation). I can understand why people would think that AmStaffs aren't APBTs because the essence of an APBT is performance. But, no other breed(s) went into the creation of the AmStaff, so I don't consider them to be a different breed. Different flavor of the same breed maybe, but not a different breed.
