Well, out with the old and in with the new! We got a new vet today!!! I had made an appointment to get a second opinion for Chico's hips about a month ago(before Heidi's incident) and the appointment was today. I absolutely love this new vet, he's great. He spent an hour and a half looking over Chico and his whole history. I really felt like he was dedicated to helping us rather than trying to get to the golf course.

He does regular/ western medicine but he also accepts patients that are interested in a more hollistic approach. I'm very excited about this because my last vet just gave me a bottle of Rimadyl for Chico's hips and pushed me out the door. He put Chico on a whole new diet that he is loving and a couple supplements that I was missing. He also gave us a much safer pain medication called Nutriflex and Arnica. It seems to work too. Maybe Chico will get a full night's rest for a change! He was very positive and seemed to think that we could manage Chico's hip problem through a better diet and supplementation. I was extremely willing to give this a try because the alternative will be a life of pain and expensive surgeries. ](*,)

We are going to go back in a month to see if he has any improvement and if he hasn't, we will try the Adequan injections. I have heard great things about those too. They're pretty pricey though.

If anybody reads this that has a dog with joint problems, don't hesitate to pm me, I'd love to share the advice for supplements that he gave me. It just feels really good to finally find a vet that I agree with and can communicate with. No more getting yelled at for trying to provide a healthy diet for my dogs either!

I got a hold of Chico's x-rays (had to pay the old vet $20) and I'm posting them just in case anybody is interested in seeing them. I think it's kinda interesting to look at this kind of stuff and I know several people on here that probably would like to see them. Anyways, the hip on the left (Chico's right) is the really bad one. It really isn't in the socket much. The vet said that is kind of a good thing right now though. That way the bones aren't rubbing as much. The other side is bad but not as bad.

this is an x-ray of his knee. They are both healthy, I just thought they looked so funny on an x-ray. They look like a cartoon to me! He has a little bird leg!

Hey, cool x-rays. Love to look at them. :D

This tells you right there that the vet is not as professional as he should be.
Vets usually will send x-rays back and forth as professional courtesy.
You had already paid for them when they were taken, so they were
already yours to start with.

I saw that too...I dont have the slightest idea how to properly look at these...but it looked like right below the knee on the outside is a fracture?!?!?!?

Amber I am glad you found a great vet...and one that actually comunicates with you and works with you...seems those are hard to come by now! Is he a specialist? or just a vet?

Their bones always do look so fragile under x-rays, but I guess so does everyone's really.
I see what ya'll are referring to, but I can't help but to notice the little face.
  Everytime I look at the knee x-ray that's all I can see, a little side profile of a nose, eye, and mouth a little farther down below it.

OMG I can see it! Freaky ...but that is what I am talking about...The mouth and the line making the back of the face looks like a fracture...but like I said I have no freakin clue how to read these.

Glad to hear you are happier with the new vet, and that Chico is getting better options.

The xrays are cool, but sad. Hope he feels better with the new meds. How expensive is the surgery?

You can get the script, btw, and purchase Adequan online with the script, and give it yourself, if you're interested in doing that.

Sorry the x-rays turned out so gigantic!!! That knee one does look like a face! The vet didn't mention anything irregular so I don't think he had a fracture. :dontknow:

cfhoftampa, he's a vet. He spent 12 years in India reasearching wild dogs and that is when he started looking into more hollistic ways of treating certain conditions. Most of his clients do not take the hollistic approach because they've been programmed to look for magical pills or whatever but he does offer it to people that are interested. He was recommended to me by several diferent places and he has been in business for a long time so I think he's pretty legitamite.

Cannon, we're hoping he won't have to get surgery ever. The surgery is very traumatic. Eight weeks in a crate with little activity. And it costs around $5000 per hip. This would be for a full replacement. If we can manage it through diet, supplements, weight control, and exercise, then this is the best in my opinion.

msvette2u, thanks for the info about buying the Adequan online. That seems like it would be a better way to go. That way we could just do it from our home. Thanks!
