Hi, Axel is a mostly white pit bull/ Boxer mix. He's a little over a year old and he seems to have skin sensitivities. Like, he itches a lot, sometimes will get these red sore type marks but they go away. He's very healthy. How do I rule out food and other things that might be causing this? Or is all this because he is mostly white?? Help. Dog Fence Carnivore Working animal Companion dog

Is it something that bothers him? How frequent is it? If you're willing to go the route of ruling out certain ingredients in food, it's a long and arduous task. You basically have to just start eliminating things one by one...it's expensive (but well worth it in the end). OR, you can do allergy testing, which I understand is expensive, too. One of the most common allergies is wheat, so maybe purchase a bag that doesn't have it, and go from there....you might just get lucky, and find that's it right away!

When we first got our AB as an adult dog she had skin issues. She was being fed really cheap food. We switched her over to a no corn, soy or wheat food and she cleared up in less than a month. A much cheaper route than allergy testing for sure. It is worth a try. Good luck. Just gradually make the switch.

We recently switched from blue buffalo to 4health from TSC to save some $ but we are switching back. The calorie content on blue buffalo is higher and she has dropped too much weight since the switch. Life is a learning opportunity. I am not willing to pay for one of the ultra $ kibbles, since I am feeding four dogs.

Agree with the others.

I used just about every type food out there over a 3 year period, some ok, some not so ok. The best I found for my guy was the Iams Veterinary Formula Skin & Coat Plus Response KO, which is a prescription food and is Kangaroo and Oat. He was on the California naturals kangaroo and lentil's before and doing well on it but when the recall of all their food came out I had to make the switch. I didn't think he would do well on the Iams but he actually did extremely well on it, I won't be switching back.

My all white AB started to have skin issues at about 1 year old. The vet told me to try and change one thing at a time to see if anything changes. I tried changing treats, and then laundry detergent and finally FOOD!!! Food was what made the difference. I switched her to a lamb and rice formula and that made all the difference.

Every now and then she will still break out in a few bumps but they don't bother her and it was nothing like they were before.

Good luck!!
