Im thinking of changing Annie's food from Nutro Adult Lamb and Rice to either Eagle Pack or Blue Buffalo. Sadly, those are the 2 best foods my crappy town carries unless I wanna pay $65 for a 22 pound bag of TimberWolf - which I would- if I could afford it, but cant right now.
She has been on the Nutro since she was about 7 weeks old (weaned herself to the adult food while she was still at the breeders). She's not losing weight or anything - and she's happy to eat it - but her coat just sucks on it. It's all dull and flakey. And her poo isn't as consistant as it should be by now.

So any advice? Eagle Pack or Blue Buffalo? I think they score pretty close in the ratings - but I just don't know which to try first.

Are you planning on sticking with Lamb and Rice formula? Here are the ingredient lists of the two you'd be looking at if you are:

Blue Buffalo Lamb and Brown Rice
Deboned Lamb, Lamb Meal, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley, Oatmeal, Rye, Rice Protein Concentrate, Alfalfa, Sunflower Oil (preserved with Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Whole Carrots, Whole Sweet Potatoes, Ground Flax Seed, Menhaden Fish Meal, Sea Salt, Barley Grass, Calcium Phosphate, Dried Kelp, Dried Chicory Root (Inulin), Whole Garlic Cloves, Lecithin, Parsley, Glucosamine*, Spirulina*, Yucca Schidigera Extract , Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bacillus Subtilis, Bifidobacterium Thermophilum, Bifidobacterium Longum, Enterococcus Faecium, Zinc Amino Acid Complex ( source of Chelated Zinc), Choline Chloride, Iron Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Iron ), Turmeric, Vitamin E Supplement, Manganese Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Manganese), Beta Carotene, Copper Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Copper), Potassium Amino Acid Complex (source of Chelated Potassium), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Ascorbate (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Calcium Pentothenate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Rosemary Extract, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Potassium Iodide, Biotin, Cobalt Proteinate (source of Chelated Cobalt), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Menadione Dimethylpyrimidinol Bisulfite (source of Vitamin K Activity), Sodium Selenite.

Eagle Pack Holistic Lamb Meal and Rice
Ingredients: Lamb Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Ground White Rice, Chicken Fat (Preserved With Natural Mixed Tocopherols), Oatmeal, Dried Beet Pulp, Flaxseed, Dried Egg Product, Carrots, Sun-Cured Alfalfa, Peas, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Quinoa (Organic), Apples, Blueberries, Inulin, Taurine, Beta-Carotene, Cranberries, Dehydrated Kelp, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Yucca Schidigera Extract, DL-Methionine, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Riboflavin Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, d-Pantothenic Acid, Niacin Supplement, Choline Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Folic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Biotin, Lecithin, Rosemary Extract, Inositol, Polysaccharide Complexes Of Zinc, Iron, Manganese, Copper and Cobalt, Potassium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Enterococcus faecium, B. subtilus, Bacillus licheniformis, Bacillus coagulins, Aspergillus oryzae, and Aspergillus niger.

If they only have the regular Eagle Pack and not the holistic formula DO NOT BUY IT. The regular Eagle Pack has corn in it which is no good.

Personally I think the Blue Buffalo looks better because it has deboned lamb AND lamb meal in it (as the first two ingredients in fact), not just lamb meal, and it also has a good amount of fish products which are great for the coat and the skin. It also doesn't have any dried beet pulp (useless filler) and looks a little bit better in general.

That's just my take on it. Different people read the labels differently, though, as far as what's important and what isn't, but definitely don't do regular Eagle Pack, or anything with corn (of any sort) in it.

Also beware, even within the same brand, different formulas (chicken vs. lamb) can have significantly different ingredients, not just a change of the meat used. So just keep your eyes open :)

And if you're ever curious about raw that's a good way to go that can be much cheaper than buying bags of kibble if you can find a good supplier. My friend once fed her two adult Rotties for 3 months on $90!! Can't beat that :)

I am actually leaning more towards the BB only because of the fist two ing. being both meat and that they use fish. The research I've done also says that the regular Eagle Pack is awful so if I were to choose any of the EP stuff - it would be the holistic no doubt about it.

To be completly honest... I know next to nothing on feeding Raw. So knowing what I do about it - I wouldn't have the first clue as to go about finding a dealer locally.

Thanks for the advice! Im off to find some info on feeding Raw!

I have tried BB on my pitbull, but his allergies did not get along with it, even though it was the fish kind. It's a good food...but didn't work out for us. I would say its much better then Nutros though.

Eagle pack versus Blue Buffalo

Try adding a supplement like Missing link to it or Nupro. You can get a taste sample of Nupro by calling 1-800-360-3300. My dogs love it and after 2 weeks I can tell the difference in their coats and energy level.

Well, we made the switch to the BB. Had to cold turkey her as the place we buy food from was out of the Nutro(we were going to get a small bag to mix with the new stuff because we ran out of her old stuff) So her butt is pretty bad right now - but in a week or so we'll see how she's doing on the BB. She just loves the stuff.

Im looking into the supplements. I'll call about the Nupro and see what the dealio is. Thanks!
