Eating disorder

I think Sheila is Anorexic :lol: All seriousness, she does not eat like most dogs do. This is the third time I have changed her food since we got her from the pound. She use to tear up the purina crap they were feeding her at the pound, put her towards better foods and nothing doing. She will take a few bites, and then just walks away. Every once in a while she will eat like she has never had food months and gulp down the bowl, but should it not be like this with every feeding. I do fast her like one half day a week (ie no breakfast) Her stools are normal, and plenty!!! I am following the guidlines on the bags, and wonder if this is just too much food for her??? She rarely eats more than half her serving. I try and follow the 15-20minute food down rule, but sometimes she will not touch in the AM or PM. she definetly has no lack of appetites when it comes to treats and will gobble them all day. Any pointers??

do you exercise her before you feed her? This usually helps a ton and also helps with discipline... work then food.

But I would keep doing the 15 min rule for more then a day... I think it was attitudes dog, I could be wrong, who went 5 days without touching it and then finally gave it and now scarfs down everything. Dogs are okay giong a few days without food. As long as nothing is physically wrong with her and she is just being very stubborn.

Btw....the reason she gobbled up the purina... I would have gobbled up mcdonalds every day too when i was young if my mom gave it to me!!

nupro supplements and every once and a wile we put bacon greace on top and mix it in not a lot but just enuff to give some flavor i sware by nupro comes in a powder form and i u want u can add a little warm water to make a gravy shell tear it up i promace

I'd warm up some chicken broth in the microwave and then pour it over the food when I made the switch. It was the hot ticket. I still do it every now and then as a treat

The ONLY way we got Atticus to eat was by adding a 1/2 can of wet per feeding. So, we mix it in real good, so he has no choice but to eat his kibble. If we lay the kibble down dry, it'll take him all day to eat it. Mix in the wet, it's gone in (literally) 10 seconds.

Patch gets his kibble served with a little wet food mixed in... otherwise he will snub his nose at it too.
He is SUCH a kibble snob!

Sometimes i give himother things, for a bit of variety....
for example:
i mix in plain yoghurt (with acidopholis)..
or i will mix some gravy up with it.....
I always add some hot water to the kibble to bring out the flavours.

I also mix in some lightly steamed carrots and other vegies...

he will gulp up the food ONLY if there's something mixed in.

Dry kibble - forget it...

Also, i NEVER give the recommended dose on the pack... i always give him a little less because i find i'm just throwing it out otherwise, and also, he gets meaty bones and other treats throughout the day so that makes up for it.

i reckon feeding less is better than feeding more.

How funny is that?! Atticus has been a food snob from DAY ONE. I don't mind, the stuff he's getting (wet) is really good for him and his coat. Plus last night I went and got some fish oil stuff for his food, too.

The more "goodies" you give them, the more they will want (or demand). I add a small portion (1/3 full size can or 1 small can) 2 or 3 times a week at the evening meal. I'll never forget what a food snob my first dog was> I was practically preparing him a gormet meal to get him to eat. Then one day I looked outside and saw my neighbor, a gritty old fart with 3 hounds, pouring a large scoop of cheap farm association kibble over the fence when he fed his dogs. When I stopped that, then my dog ate what I gave him really well.

Oh, we tried everything. He would go for days without eating.

I feed Patch in the morning before i leave for work, and when i get home his bowl is empty... so he eats it throughout the day.
my husband was home yesterday, and was watching patch for a little while and said that the birds have been coming to Patch's bowl and pinching his kibble!!!!

So we've been buying expensive bird food............. :twisted: :twisted:

As long as Patch has eaten half of his food (which he usually does straight away) i don't get worried because he (or the birds) eat the rest throughout the day.....

At night he eats inside, so i don't get worried the birds are eating his food....

but how annoying!

Well at night she always gets fed about 1/2-1hr after her long walk. Guess I will do the 15 minute rule for a few days and she don't eat oh well. I don't think there is anything physically wrong with her, cuz her energy is as high as every, drinks plenty of water and has been having regular bowel movements. I think like some others have said, my daughter is a food snob!! Will update in a few days to let ya'll know how she is eating. gonna try a few of the mentioned things, thanks.

Oh my gosh you are freaking me out!
i want to go home to my Patch right now!

he hasn't been the same all weekend... we took him out on a play date with another dog on saturday and they played all day and when we got home he was SO tired..... but he's limping and has been lethargic all day yesterday and today.

what if he's gotten a disease from a bird?

OMG i am freaking out here!

we're taking him to the vet's this afternoon.

we have a problem with black birds her in nj we used to leave our dogs out side when we would go out and when we came home ther was bird poop alll over ther food and bowl and water bowl thats why we only feed inside

these birds are major scavengers... and they're eating all the expensive DVP we give Patch! talk about expensive bird food!

and their poop is purple because they eat berries from a berry tree nearby.
and it stains our paving.

but yes, they poop near his bowl and i'm constantly cleaning it.

patch eats inside with us at dinner time... so it's just the morning feed that gets attacks by birds, because i give him breakfast as i'm leaving for work in the morning... there's no time for him to eat inside with me.
What i'm going to do now is get his port-a-kennel and put it up on the verandah and place his food and water in there... so that the birds can't get to it.

is that a dumb idea?

it will also shelter the food from ants as well, which is another problem i have.
i've been spraying non-allergenic low-scent insect repellant near the food mats to stop all the ants.

would an elevated bowl prevent the ants thing?

dont know about the ants i treat my yard with 7 so that kills all the bugs plus a extermator comes once a month so bugs is never a plroblem for us kennel idea dont sound that bad a cuple of my friends keep ther dogs oustside year round must of them have big sheds 15x15 20x20 some bigger some smaller 10x10 well they build a dog door so they can go inside if it gets cold or raines in the back of the shed the dog isnt abel to room the wole shed just like a dog house facing the wall and u cut an opening in the wall u get me is it looks like the dog house is in the shed

Will insect repellant and bug treatments harm Patch?

I am so reluctant to use them since we got him..... what if he eats something treated with it?

if your going to repellent spray it and dont let him near it for at least 24hr some not all dog can have reactions we use it and a lot of my friends do and no problems here

They actually make bowls that I think are called "fool a bug". They are designed to keep crawling insects out of the food.
