i once heard if a dog is an outside dog, and then becomes an inside dog, the dog will usually hold it for as long as he can before he goes in the house.
actually, that was the only way i could train my rottie pup (she's now 11) ..... after 3 months of always cleaning up after her, i stuck her butt outside for about a week, and have never had a problem since.... knock on wood.
