ME has got it right. Don't just go with the hype! Personally if you can buy it in the grocery store, I would steer away from it, and then find the food that works for your dog and is good for your budget!
Foods to avoid entirely: Ol Roy, Pedigree, Beneful, Natures Defence, Cesar, Alpo, Kibbles and Bits, etc. All crap.

The best food for your dog will make your dog look and act healthy. Things to look for:

- No tear stains
- No red in between the toes
- no excessive scratching
- a good smell.. If he smells like he's rotting then there is a yeast problem
- no smelly or excessively dirty ears
- no excessive shedding
- a nice shiny coat
- Clear eyes
- good energy
- Solid poops about 1-2 x daily

Finding the right combination of ingredients for your dog is the key. Go with a food with a good amount of meat and meat meal in the first 5 ingredients. Avoid foods that list a grain first. The less ingredients the better. A food with a TON of fillers will be a lesser quality.

Remember it takes 4 weeks for a dogs system to adjust. Do a slow transition and then make your judgements :)

Raw is not necessarily the best. I am so sick of this "Raw Diet" hype. I tried Bowser on it and not only did the meat not agree with him, but he had the runs for days. I did it correctly, read all the research, was hooked in like so many. I personally don't think it's the best way to feed your dog. Just protein and bone will not give them everything they need. Dogs are not carnivores. They are Omnivores.

I have resigned from my position of kibble critic. Our dog does the same on every food that we have tried with the exception that she is allergic to corn, wheat or soy. She had terrible skin issues when we got her as a four year old and grain free fixed the skin problems. However, she still sheds like crazy. The Krkland kibble at Costco is a great deal if you have a store near you.

Ideal Balance looks good. It's one of the only in store Hills products I would buy. Bowser is on a Hills Prescription DIet and does extremely well on it. Hope that one works!

The one thing I give Hills is that they have Nutritionists running food trials ON DOGS and not in Petrie dishes like other pet food companies. Also, they rarely if ever have food recalls.

We have used Avoderm and Taste of the Wild. We switched form Avoderm because Harley was having an allergic reaction that we thought was food related (it was not). We changes to Taste of the Wild, Lamb and she loves it. I would go back to Avoderm because it was a little cheaper, but she really enjoys the Taste of the Wild. Its a little pricey at 50 dollars for a thirty pound bag but you get what you pay for in nutrition.

Hi guys,
I am currently feeding my 9-month AB with Acana Regionals (Wild Praire). From what I've heard it is OK to feed him with this as it is all life stages, however ChampionPetFoods have recently updated the information so that it states 'Adult Dogs only'. I guess this is a marketing stint, but I wanted to check with some of you guys here. I am also willing to try ToTW, however it is not sold here in Bulgaria :(

We feed blue buffalo adult lamb and brown rice. It's a pretty good food for the price. The dogs like it, and they have very healthy coats with little odor. Lucian, 115 pound CC, eats about 4-1/2 c. per day. They also have the "every 10 bags you get one free" deal. We get ours at the local farm store.

Eta: I agree that feeding adult food at 9 months is just fine IME.

I buy Diamond large breed, that rated the highest of the Diamond foods on the rating list here, they each get 2 cups a day and they do very well on it. Griff's bald spots on his back have filled in, no new out breaks in over a year and a half (yeast problems) they have never had tear stains. The cheap stuff is $18-$20 for 40#s and lasts 2 weeks, the Diamond is $28-$30 for 40#s and lasts 3-4 weeks, usually a tad over 3 weeks but with this hot weather it lasted 4 this time around. So it's better for them & in the long run not any spendier either. It's worked well for us.
