For the old-timers here with EBs-what do u feed ur EB!?

ive read multiple posts concerning food and diet in this forum and I just cant make up my mind #-o

reason i ask is, id rather learn from EB owners that actually tried and tested and has experience with great success=D>

my 6mo old EB is on Royal Canin EB 30 dry dog food right now, his stool is somewhat soft and never firm, but there are times where his stool would be all wet, but then a few hours later be soft/firm again...but he loves the food and eats it all!!
I give him a couple tsp of plain, non fat yogurt maybe 3x or 4x a week and of course-his supplements-which is omega 3 fish oil, vit e and glucosamine sprinkled over his food everyday

I also read about raw diet-which im honestly staying away from:laughing6:

I am aware that each dog is different, but from ur own experience with trying diff foods-what would u say worked best for ur EB?

I don't have an EB - dogs in general are pretty much the same as far as diet goes. Personally I would get him off Royal Canin. It's not agreeing with him because his poop isn't consistent. You could try something grain free...

Why are you staying away from raw?

I have an AB and am certainly not an "old timer" LOL however I have dealt with tummy issues with Morley ever since we got her at 8 weeks old and she is now 7 months.

Constant diarrhea, skin irritation, etc. Was not fun. We are now on Natural Balance Fish and Sweet Potato and she seems to be doing fabulous on it - loves to eat it and her poop has been good (until 2 days ago when I thought I would try her on a few carrots...apparently not a good idea).

just dont want to deal with trying to get it here in nyc and id rather not feed them raw..

I would only feed grain free food before I went to raw. Some grain free foods are Taste of the Wild, EVO, Orijen, Acana, Merrick, Natural Balance, Nature's Variety Instinct, and there are others.

i figured that much about the grain free food, BUT i still have like 3 small bags of the Royal Canin food left:-k

and I have to also put into consideration which pet stores around my area that sells them-i usually go to Petco..

what did u feed ur dogs b4 u went all raw?

You will want to use the food you have left to slowly transition your dogs to a new food. I have fed TOTW, EVO, and Nature's Variety Instinct.

It is but it has higher calories which helps aid in not having to feed quite as much so it tends to work out as far as how much you spend. And you also have to consider the quality of the foods.

Hey Man!
If you want a good food for a good price that has worked for my bully (who has crazy stomach issues), try out the Pro Plan Sensitive Skin and Stomach. It's a black and pink bag, comes in 35lbs for just under $50. It's probably even cheaper in the states.
It's a limited ingredient diet so dogs don't react to all the "extras" that many companies put in the food (fruit, veg, different meat and starch sources, etc).
This is ONLY salmon, Rice and Oatmeal.
My Bowser was on Royal Canin as a pup and it destroyed his immune and digestive system. The Pro Plan SS&S did wonders for him and he has very firm poops.

Give her a try! If not, then I recommend the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish that Morley is on. It's far more pricey however.

But he should also consider the quality of the ingredients in the Pro Plan. TOTW is grain free and is $43 for 35#... some places it's cheaper. I can get it for $39.

Oh I totally hear you. However, if his EB really has stomach problems, TOTW will be no good because it is not a limited ingredient food. Bowser couldn't handle all the extra fruit, and veggie sources. Grain free is great, but for dogs with really sensitive digestive systems, all the unnecessary fillers will wreak havoc.

I also don't see anything terrible in the Pro Plan. It contains Salmon, fish meal, rice, and oatmeal. No weird fillers or anything. Honestly, it has the same ingredients as the high quality vet food that my vet was pushing.
I'm not looking to get into an argument, but just because it's a Purina product does not necessarily mean that it's crap like many of their other formulas. This one seems to live up to it's "hype".
Again, it's all personal opinion, and I know that it worked for my dog, so I think that's justification enough not to necessary rule it out as a decent kibble.

You may not want to feed all raw, hell, I don't....but don't let your dog miss out on the occasional chicken or beef scrap that you don't want. It's AWESOME, and you don't have to feel guilty about letting good food go to waste.

I love a recipe that calls for a pound of ground beef, and I get a package with like 1.16....I know that Atti gets something to nom nom on!

as for my eb-he really doesnt have any stomach issues or anything for that matter. I just noticed his stool being too soft/wet at times. I dont overfeed him nor do i give him table scraps. I guess im just trying to find the right diet for him and my puggle.

i really am leaning towards the Nature's Variety Instinct Grain-Free Duck Meal & Turkey Meal Formula Dry Dog Food-and most importantly Petco carries it\\

I fed... holy crap I can't think of it. Um....... Acana. IMHO, raw is best. Too much research to dispute it. But, if I HAD to feed kibble I suppose I would feed Acana. But the ones Cassie mentioned are good too. But I would feed roadkill before I'd go back to kibble. Just sayin.

TOTW is limited ingredient and good ingredient. The only hype I know about Purina is negative lol I won't go into detail but the method of obtaining ingredients isn't the only bad thing.

It's all honestly what works for your dog and you. I considered Nature's Variety Instinct and personally was not impressed with the ingredients and price. At Petco or PetSmart I have been able to find products I prefer for less (took us a year to find the right food for our cat). TOTW was my kibble choice but no kibble can compare to what I see on raw now, finally haha. Even though I preferred TOTW it still made my cat sick, and she won't eat raw.

Also stool inconsistency = digestion issues = tummy issues
