For the old-timers here with EBs-what do u feed ur EB!?

ive read multiple posts concerning food and diet in this forum and I just cant make up my mind #-o

reason i ask is, id rather learn from EB owners that actually tried and tested and has experience with great success=D>

my 6mo old EB is on Royal Canin EB 30 dry dog food right now, his stool is somewhat soft and never firm, but there are times where his stool would be all wet, but then a few hours later be soft/firm again...but he loves the food and eats it all!!
I give him a couple tsp of plain, non fat yogurt maybe 3x or 4x a week and of course-his supplements-which is omega 3 fish oil, vit e and glucosamine sprinkled over his food everyday

I also read about raw diet-which im honestly staying away from:laughing6:

I am aware that each dog is different, but from ur own experience with trying diff foods-what would u say worked best for ur EB?

I have tried most of the foods listed, Orijen and Merick are the only two that my guy has digested without issue. Merick is very reasonably priced as well and what I have been using as of late. Will go raw one of these days.

Tina - TOTW is not limited ingredient. It has too many ingredients to be limited. If you actually look at a limited ingredient food and compare it to TOTW you will see that TOTW has a lot more in it.

As majority have already said, go with grain free if you can't go RAW. I have fed Blue Buffalo Wilderness, TOTW, Canidae Pure Sea, and Wellness Core. Of all those grain free foods, I saw the best results with the Canidae, and the Wellness Core. TOTW was not bad, but Sunni got bad tear stains and watery eyes on it. After swithching back off of it, her eyes cleared right up. Another member said he noticed the same with TOTW and his AB. Kody, our husky has a very sensitive stomache. We used to feed the Pro Plan, until I was put on the right track of better dog foods. He has done amazing on the grain free foods. I can't get Canidae locally, I have to order it online, usually through petcarerx.com, or any other place I find a better deal. I know it's inconvenient waiting on shipping, but it is the food that sits best with my dogs. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Before feeding raw I fed Orijin, which was good, you feed very little and get small stools. Before that I was feeding Canidae until they changed the ingredients. Don't put raw completely out of your mind. There are some great raw premade patties you can get for a reasonable price that has everything your EB would need.

Also don't have an EB I have an AB which really shouldn't matter much. I've alternated from Orijen to EVO and back and to TOTW and back to Orijen and now EVO again. I've had the best results from EVO so far.
It's really trial and error. Kinda sucks but it is what it is.

Guys-THANK U so much for all your input into this matter!!

for now-i ended up with Nature's Variety Instinct and will go for that and see how it goes and take it from there

as for Tyson-he thanks u also-he finished all the food this morning and ended up catching the itis from a full stomach....

It's a limited ingredient diet so dogs don't react to all the "extras" that many companies put in the food (fruit, veg, different meat and starch sources, etc).
This is ONLY salmon, Rice and Oatmeal.
My Bowser was on Royal Canin as a pup and it destroyed his immune and digestive system. The Pro Plan SS&S did wonders for him and he has very firm poops.

Give her a try! If not, then I recommend the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish that Morley is on. It's far more pricey however.

I trust this site as they are non bias and have nothing to profit from it. I'm very selective when choosing foods for my store, most I would feed to my own pets. I wish the foods could be judged by the stool but if you load any dog full of grains you are sure to have a hard poop. I stay away from "commercial brands" as they tend to spend their money on advertising rather then using quality ingredients.

I think that has a lot to do with owners feeding the crap food. I almost never see advertisements for most of the higher quality foods. Blue Buffalo is the only brand I can think of, and their commercials is waht turned my attention to what I was feeding. I used to think that Iams and Pedigree must be the best food because they are most all you see in ads. I learned from doing research, and in most cases it seems that's how other pet owners have to find out. On top of that, a large majority of veterinarians sell Science Diet, and so the cleint automatically assumes it must be a good food if the vet is promoting it.

Paul what do you recommend as a high quality limited ingredient grain free dog food? I'm thinking about switching Bowser from the Pro Plan. He does well with fish and really can't eat fruit or vegetables. The more limited te ingredients the better

Acana makes an apple and lamb LI food. That would be the only LI kibble I'd feel comfortable feeding a dog. Btw, raw is as limited ingredient you can get

One day I'll switch to raw. One day

This Acana is not limited ingredient at all! It's full of fruit and veg. Not something I'd feed bowser.
Leaning towards DVP Sweet taters and fish.

Oh you're right. It is however hypoallergenic. Have you tried an elimination diet with bowser? To find out what the actual culprit is?

As for the natural balance, I can't give you much advice. I think kibble is the devil and in most cases exasperates problems in dogs. Then when you take away ingredients that provide at least a little nutrition to create a LI food made up of mostly starch, IMO you're really going down the wrong path. But I do understand how frustrating it can be to find the right food. I had so many issues with Murphy when he was younger. It wasn't until I fed raw that I got his digestive health in control.

Wellness does "Simple Solutions" and Natural Balance has "limited ingredients" diets.

This is a great food but you have to take the switch slow and not overfeed or the nasty runs will occur

When i first got Bronson (AB) i started on Orijen, which appeared to be a little too rich as his stool was constantly runny, so i switched to Artemis which he did great on, was easily persuaded to switch to RAW and havnt looked back....

I've switched too!! Can't wait to see the results. We are at about 2 cups DVP and 1.5 PPSS&S. Glad to hear Morley is still doing well. Hoping Bowser will be the same. Wish us luck!

Thanks! So far so good! Poops are still solid which is wonderful. Just waiting to see if it improves his skin issues. Bowz has developed red tear stains, red between the toes and under his tail. He's also started shedding like mad and his coat is really dull. Hoping for the best

This sounds like a fungal infection, not something that will be cleared up with a food change.
