I was speaking to a trainer today about Boss' problem with over-excitement when meeting new people and about his jumping up on strangers problem. He recommended that rather than taking the dog to a trainer, that I buy the Gentle Leader Headcollar. I must say, it is FANTASTIC! I am completely in control of him no matter what with this thing, it doesn't hurt him, either. Has anyone else used this?

Tara and Linds,
Do a search for halter or gentle leader. There was a discussion about it not too long ago.

Yes, it is and it works wonderfully. But, I don't think it's the same as the head halter. The lady at Petsmart told me that the head halter is too loose, or something and that Boss would probably be able to get it off. Check out Petsmart or Super Pet, they should have them there.

yes, I use a gentle leader. Works great! I usually use it only when we go to a store, or when we go somewhere were she'll pull. When were going for a simple walk or training i use the ez collar, which is basically a martingale.

Used one on GSD, she was put down with spinal problems at the age of 10 :( would never use one again for a hyper dog. The only good thing they cud be used for is dog aggression, as it breaks the eye contact.

I have never heard that they cause spinal problems. Maybe it's possible on a hyper dog w/ it on but most dogs that do have it on them calm down. Some insecure dogs feel even more safer with it on. I looked on the old thread and nothing there has any articles or proof that the gentle leader causes spinal injuries. I personally don't believe this, unless you use it the wrong way or its not properly fitted, but hey, thats just me.

http://www.boxerworld.com/training/collars/

Also found this:
http://dogs.about.com/cs/generalcare/p/training_collar.htm

It details the difference between Gentle Leader and the Halti. I am looking for that German study that is referenced, but I can't find it.

And another:
http://www.geocities.com/jetflair/halti.html

I'm just trying to show you guys all the different info out there.

Good links there Haus.

I'm guess what the rule is, make sure no matter what collar u have, make sure it's the right one for your dog and you know how to use it properly. There is so much info out there on the net, use it...I didn't have this 11 years ago :(

My dog is extremely hyper around other people, but somehow, this collar seems to calm him down and when he jumps, I just give it a slight pull and it seems to work.

Thanks, I try. :)

I think the biggest thing, is make sure whatever collar you use is PROPERLY fitted and you know how to use whichever training collar you chose, PROPERLY.

Thank you for the websites HausMommy. There's one argument that says the Gentle leader is better than the Halti and the other one says the opposite. Both website have good examples supporting them. Although, the geocitie website one said that the Gentle Leader has gotten better than before.

Like the websites said, if use it properly it can work but if you don't it can cause problems. My gentle leader came with DVD that shows you how to adjust it properly and walk with it properly and i've watched it a couple times, so i'm pretty well using it.

Tara, did yours come with a DVD?

I don't use it all the time either, I do find it good at dog shows because it calms Abby down where as with a flat collar she would pull my arm out. But for regular walks I use a "greyhound" type martingale collar. Just bought it at Petco, it's really cool! lol.

No DVD, it came with a book on how to put it on the dog and make sure the fit is snug and proper. It goes on about the proper fit for pages and pages. Then it also talks about all the different ways you can train the dog with the Gentle Leader, like pulling, jumping up, barking, biting, sit and stay, down and stay etc. I think it's very thorough and I think this headcollar is a really good training aid. Don't get me wrong, Boss will do practically anything for treats, but they don't calm him down and prevent him from jumping up :D I'm so glad I found this thing. What is the martingale collar =s? What does it do?

Martingale collars are actually intended to be used on dogs like greyhounds and whippets. Because these dogs heads are smaller than their necks. They are designed so that while on a lead the dog cannot back their head out of the collar. The thing is, they have started to become popular for all breeds. I like them, personally they are my favorite. I am getting Jaz a new one this spring, but I can't decide on the color/pattern.

I like this one: http://www.dogmalondon.com/collarpics/martingale/Roxxy01.jpg

They're so pretty! Sometimes I wish Boss was a girl dog  lol...I make him wear a sweater sometimes, and he gets mad :D. So, what do these collars do for bully breeds then =s? Are they just for fashion?
