My husband and I are thinking about getting an English bulldog. There are so many scams and puppy mills out there, that we're worried about who to get a puppy from. We've been considering a breeder we found online, but she says on her website that there are no spaying restrictions in the puppy contract and that sounds an alarm. Also, after I wrote to her, she asked me nothing about the home I'd give the puppy, or any other questions that one would expect from a reputable breeder.

Do you have any suggestions about finding a breeder?

Thanks,
Bobbie

You can try calling the Breeder's Association...they may be able to give you some contacts in your area...or go to a dog show, watch the bulldogs in the ring - ask questions to the owners/handlers of dogs you like the look of...

Good breeders generally will offer the names of friends and acquaintances that might have puppies available even if they don't...

http://www.thebca.org/ this is the Bulldog Club of America's site

you want the breeders to have done health testing..at min. tracheas, heart, thyroid, patellas. They should have titled dogs..either comformation or obedience titles..or both. Ask for their vet's name to check as a reference. how old is the bitch, how many littters has she had? What health guarentees do they have? Will they take back the dog at anytime, for any reason for the rest of it's life?
These are some of the questions to ask.
