My 7yr old female AB constantly gnaws on her paws and a couple of times a month I have to use an ointment for her ears canals as they get very red and swell. This has gotten worse over the years.

The vet said it was allergies and to give here benadryl. I have always given her upper end food and have tried different foods, grain free, lamb & fish.

Anyone have suggestions on what else to try? How about a supplement like Dynabite?

Food. Food solves everything. I can almost 99.9% confidently tell you that ointments and creams and shampoos are a bandaid and that diet will fix this. What food is she on? Sounds like you need to change the protein source, or try a vet diet that conquers air borne allergies.

My Golden Retriever had this for years and we bandaided her with everything: Allergy shots, creams, antiinflammatories, shampoos, etc. Our vet for years said it was allergies. We changed her to a Vet Derm diet and BAM! Different dog.

Bowser too is allergic to everything under the sun. We changed to a derm diet and he has never looked better. We tried every high end grain free diet, even went raw, and nothing help! The only food they helped at all was a veterinary diet. I just don't trust the commercial pet foods anymore for dogs with extreme allergies. They are not tested by scientists in labs or done feeding trials with dogs like Vet diets are.

I would recommend Hills Z/D for your dog. It's very expensive but it worked on my two dogs and cleared them right up. You can also go with Royal Canin MediCal derm diets. There are supposed to be excellent as well.

what about honey? not the stuff you get at alberstons, but the localy produced "farmers market" honey? I know it eases my wifes allergies. would it work the same with the dogs?

I know that there are some things that humans can eat that are bad for dogs.

My AB puppy has been chewing on her paws as well! I've been a bit worried. She does it at least like 6 times a day until I catch her and stop her.. And her skins been a bit dry. I just switched her to blue buffalo grain free puppy food so I'll see if it gets better but still worried. I thought it might have been fleas? So we bought flea med for her( also because I caught a flea jump on our bed) but I can't spot any on her. Any suggestions or feed back?

grain free food, apple cider vinegar, medicated bath when itchy, (usually a bath once a month here) at least weekly ear cleaning, I use Wallie's ear drops from the health food store & about once a year Griff still gets an ear infection & I have to get ear drops from the vet . . . Griffin's problems are all yeast related & we have kept them pretty much under control since the grain free food & fresh water daily with a cap of ACV in it. You could also put ACV on his paws . . . I found a chicken with rice, grain free/gluten free dry dog food at my local Fleet Farm 35#s for $25 . . . so far so good . . . (stay away from products made by Diamond) talked to my vet & she said you can also try 1 Clariton a day, says it works great for some & does nothing for others . . . I did not notice a difference when I tried it with Griff . . . Good luck . . . this is a pretty common bully problem . . .

i had sarah tested and some of it was spot on some was not but its a place to start relly and it depends on the test and the lab it goes to. also you can check into some limited ingredients diets like zignature and sometimes you have to use a grain food and the protein you use is important also. find your bullies protein and go from there. you can also try apple cidar vinegar in the water or some coconut oil unrefined. me i use duoxo spray on a cotton ball and monistat mixed and clears the yeast up much better and helps with the itching. for the ears zymox or burts bees ear cleaner is good and i use chloraseb flush in the ear and ear canal and has kept me out of the vets office many times. good luck and hollar if you need more help. i dont think much of hills only as a last resort but it did fix sarah up with her poo issues and has helped lots of dogs but i only used it short term.

Bit of a home remedy but its common in some parts of the world.
Ballistol gun oil. Its commonly used on dogs and horses for itchiness.
I had a Rottie with some kind of grass allergy that made him chew the blazes out of his forelegs. The Ballistol stopped it and alleviated the itch.
My wife has used it on her own contact allergy dermatitis with good effect.

Morley has IBD, so we have to be extremely careful with what gets into her system - she is only allowed the Hill's ZD, that is also her "treat", and she gets pure pumpkin. Does your dog lick the ACV if you put it on his paws? My little dope most certainly would....and that's what scares me, although in theory it shouldn't hurt her....with her condition, it may....
