Grass Allergies??

101 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  gazar
My Victorian seems to get hives down both sides of her flanks in the spring and summer. It seems to go away in the fall and winter. I give her a Zyrtec everyday (recommended by my vet.) It just doesn't seem to help and I often have to give her a Benadryl as well. Is there something else I can do to help her? I have never had a bulldog before, is this pretty normal???

Since The vet has not determined the reason for the allergies, the best thing you can do is to wipe her off with a wash cloth each time she comes into the house and limit her out side activities. The other thing to consider is any chemicals that may be on the grass, your carpet or cleaner for the floor. Short haired dogs can have more skin issues since they have less hair to protect the skin. They can be allergic to chicken, mosquito bites, flea bites, and poison oak and poison ivy.
That is why it is best to wipe her down daily - so soaps or shampoo. Just water. Bulldogs have a protective oil on their skin. Every time shampoo or soap goes onto their skin the oils are removed and then they are more susceptible to skin issues. Best wishes for her.
