Hi,

I know I am going to sound really stupid now but here goes...
Zoe is 6 1/2 months now and I called to make her spaying appointment today. I mentioned to the vet tech that she looked a little swollen in her "private region" and the tech said that it sounds like she is already going into heat and we will have to wait until she is finished to do the procedure. I have only ever owned male dogs before and have no idea what to expect. Can someone assist me in understanding what is going to happen, what I need to do, etc. Or can someone suggest an informative site so I can do some learning. Thanks in advance for your help!

Pick her up a pair of doggie panties to save your carpet and don't let her out of your sight for the next 3 weeks. If she's an only dog it won't be too bad.

Also, be sure to still keep an eye on her and don't leave her out unattended (or in the house if you happen to have an un-neutered male) for at least a week after she stops bleeding - thats when she's most fertile!

If she wont keep a sanitary diaper on, keep her gated to a room with linoleum for easy clean up.

Throw some blankets on the couches aswell. But if she's an only dog you won't have many problems, just keep her supervised at all times and I wouldn't carry her for walks around the block or anything, you will have a trail of dogs coming from everywhere to get at her.

She's going to be miserable for awhile, she'll probaly whine and try to run out the door any chance she can get. Atleast that's how my female did. But like everyone else said just watch her carefully!

Did the vet actually see the dog or assume she was in heat by your phone conversation? Not really questioning your situation, rather, we have a six and a half month old AB female that has surprisingly large genitals and were told on more than one occasion that she was in heat. Turns out she simply is well endowed in a female sort of way and have actually heard recently of another pair of AB females with the same thing. Is this common or is my girl some sort of freak?
