Hello everyone, i have been following these forums for little bit over a month now and really like it alot. everyone has alot of great info and is really down to earth. we my girlfriend and i adopted an american bulldog over a month ago and is atad bit over 1 year old. he is white with large black spots and about 65lbs. Once we got him home and situated we noticed that he was sneezing alot and inching him self all over. so we took him to the vet and they said he prolly just has alergies. the vet told us to go by some benadryl (25mg) twice a day. yes this has def. helped alot. the issue we need everyone help about is that around his eyes get really pink. does anyone know why this happens and what is wrong with him if anything. also is this normal with this breed. i also noticed that around his mouth is pinkish. i think its his skin but not sure. any help would be totally awesome!!!!!!

we feed him nutra choice large breed dog food. its the semi dark green colored bag found at petssmart.

We have the same issues with our AB. She is all white. We use Benadryl for her allergies, which helps, but as soon as she goes outside she comes in and her muzzle and eyes are bright red.

We are pretty sure she is allergic to weeds/grasses, wheat and possibly dairy. We have tried many different food and
her little eyes and muzzle are always red when allergy season is upon us. She seems to do best with DVP or Kirland Brand Lamb and Rice.

With the sun coming out she is also extremely sensetive to the sun, so we must use sunscreen on her.
As far as I know this is pretty typical for the breed.

Probably best to just avoid what you find causes the irritations, at least for now. If dogs are like people, some will outgrow allergies, some will always have them. Food is so important, what are you using? The advice about the sunscreen was important, especially for mostly white dogs. Mosquito bites can cause big problems for bullies, too, so watch out for them. Can't wait to see some pics.

We are feeding him Nutro large breed food, its the bag that is slight dark green. what kind of sunscreen do i use on him and where do i apply it??? thanks

My 12 week old has the same problem! I've noticed that around his eyes are really red, and also his mouth!!
he too is white with black spots.

should i be worried and see a vet?
we went last week for a check up and vaccination and the vet didn't say anything about them??

Patch is eating California Natural kibble.

Where are we meant to apply the sunscreen?

Nutro is really good food. When harley had allergies, someone suggested their lamb and rice formula to me, and we had really goodluck with it. (Light green Bag). Could be wrong, but I think w/ the suncreen, you should use something formulated for babies (?) I bought a tube shaped like chapstick for my daughters face, maybe something like that would be best for the dogs face, to avoid the eyes, mouth and nose. If no-one here posts soon, I would check with the vet. The more white she has the more sensitive she might be. Maybe Cookies mom will post, CC's almost all white. It can be really hard to find the cause of allergies, so I would definately keep the benadryl in the house for now.

We've been trying to get to the root of my dog's allergies for about a year now. It's a real bummer! We thought it was food related so we switched his food several times. Chico does really well on DVP duck and potato and kirkland lamb and rice (just like Havoc's dog). I don't think Chico's is food related though. He gets really bad after he's been running through grass. Anyways, I was gonna say that you can give up to 1mg. of Benadryl per lb. of body weight. Dogs can take alot more than humans. If Chico is having a bad itchy attack, I give him 100mg. Also you should try some Microtek spray. That stuff really seems to relieve the itching. I notice that the skin around Chico's face gets really pinkish red after he's been running around alot.

Our AB had what sounds like similar symptoms as well as her brother. It turns out that they are both allergic to wheat. As soon as we cut out all of the treats with wheat in them the scratching and raw skin went away in a few days.
