How do I get Patch to stop jumping up on me ALL THE TIME!!!?

3991 Views 25 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  iluvmypit
When he was a little puppy... it was ok... I didn't mind him jumping up on me all the time.

But the kid is getting bigger, and quite frankly, I can't handle the weight of his jumping!
He almost knocks me out!!!!!!!!!!! It happens almost EVERY time he sees me.... I can understand when it's first thing in the morning, or when I get home from work (he's excited to see me) but even if I go into the kitchen, he will follow me... and jump up on me a million times... and he's also jumping up the cupboards and smells the kitchen bench.

I tell him no and put him down... but he just goes ahead and does it again!! and again!!!

How can I discipline him to only jump up when I call him to!?

I tried the leash method with Kate (because guests that come over don't do the knee thing properly) and she just thought she was going for a walk so ignored the person and didnt jump. Off comes the leash, up she goes
Bella has done that a couple of times. It's kind of funny to see her run and sit by the door while totally ignoring the guests that we have over. I think I'm going to start randomly attaching her leash to her collar so she doesn't always associate leash with walks.
oooooo leeann!! Someone has got their thinking hat on today! Great idea
I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night!!

(Does anyone else love those commercials? )
Lol. I do! .....Thats a good idea. I have a traffic leash that I used around the house to get Legend used to having a leash on. Never thought about using it to keep him near me when guests come over. He has a bad habit of sitting right next to people that come over lean in put his paw on their shoulder and "attacks" then with kisses. My guest usually laugh but I don't like it b/c sometimes you can tell it makes them feel uncomfortable(Its written all over their face) and then with my GSD paceing back and forward watching their every move it can be overwhelming.
i used that same line and got no love in another thread, glad to see i wasnt crazy

I think I need one of those collar things as well, Rex wont jump on me but he will strangers and I hate that, they say they dont mind but I think its rud eto just sit there and let your dog jump on people.
Heres the link

Anti Jump Dog harness
those harness things look really restrictive!
i don't think i could put that on Patch!.... gosh i'm so soft!

does the knee thing hurt them? i'd be worried about injuring him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but i will try it!

i just can't bear it anymore.
and when guests are over, he's usually outside in the yard, and if we go outside, he jumps up on them.... its so frustrating!

We were told by our trainer the knee thing was not the thing to do, I don't know why...She told us that when your dog jumps on you, turn around and don't touch the dog at all. If you touch the dog in any way shape or form with your hands, the dog thinks it has done something good, and will continue to do it. She said to just turn around/away from the dog.

Not saying the knee thing is wrong...just giving you another suggestion.
This is what I was taught at Puppy Pre-school, they said not to say ANYTHING when dogs jump on you because yeah it gives them attention. So you just turn the other way and cross your arms, when they come to the front of you and are not jumping you then ask them to sit, after they do this you should then greet them...because they have done something that you have asked and they should be rewarded for that.
