How many litters a year does it take for a "breeder" to be considered a byb/puppy miller?

I think 1 litter per year is fine, but only if she's bred no more than 3 times total. Anything more than that seems like it would be too hard on her body. (They look very uncomfortable!) This is assuming we're talking about responsible breeders, and not someone who just throws 2 dogs together for some money. If that were the case, 1 litter is one too many.
Puppy millers and backyard breeders are one in the same. The both disgust me.

I don't think number of litters has much to do with it. Someone could have 2 dogs and only one litter per year but still be considered a byb in my book.

Breeder should want to keep something back for themselves to better their breeding program and have waiting lists if they breed. Dogs being used should actually have something to offer the gene pool and the person breeding should have a proper understanding of what constitutes a breed worthy animal. I don't care if a person has 2 dogs and only breeds them every other year. If their dogs have nothing to offer they deserve the BYB label.
Ditto Lisa... I chose the 1 litter as well of course.
I agree with Lisa

I chose 1 litter per year.

If i had to choose i would say 1per year. But i honestly think that a reputable breeder will only breed if they know they have decent, reputable homes lined up for all possible pups as well.

I agree.
if the breeder has perfected what they set out to achieve ( healthy, stable, workable dogs)and bulldoggers recognize this and there are customers wanting to buy from the kennel i believe they can have as many litters they want a year but like another member said i think a bitch shouldnt be bred more than 3 times.
in the putnam bulldog book it goes on to say how a famous breeder who has done alot for the AB as a breed was selling about 30 pups a mnth or was it 40? some where in that region anyway.
i found out a while ago what a byb is and its got nothing to do with how many litters they have its the morals and ethics practised

I do agree with this, but why would you want to sell 30 pups a month. If you did this year around, that is ALOT of pups. THere is pretty much NO WAY that every pup went to a good home.
i know what you mean 30-40 pups a mnth is far too much but they were the claims of the breeder so even if you cut it down to 10 pups a mnth thats an average litter thats 12 litters a year.

Still too many in my opinion...to be honest, why is there a need to put that many dogs per month into the world? Plus, if that is the case, you would have to have a ridiculous amount of dogs in order to achieve this. If you have that many dogs, in my opinion, you aren't able to give each dog the amount of "quality time" (for lack of a better phrase) that it deserves. When you are producing numbers like that, no matter what your reputation is, it has become more of a business than something you are trying to influence. JMO tho...
Do u guys know how breeders out there that are considered EHTICAl breeders have more then 1 litter a year??? i dont think number can be put on the label. Really check out websites, souzas, white bandits, joshua, boyds. All have more then 1 litter a year but do have more then 1 bitch as well.. I dotn think number of litters of number of dogs have anything to do with it
A BYB to me is a person who breeds for money, and their dogs are not bettering the breed. ex Bad conformation,health,working... etc.. I want to see that the breeder has prven their dogs, therefore proved the puppies and have a consistent good litter. I want a proven breeder as well.
When breeders offer "pick of the litter" i think its a sales pitch. If you are a consistenly good breeder breeding good proven dogs. Then the whole litter should be awesome not just a few. If less then half are not good pups then the litter shouldnt be repeated!!!

See less See more
well thats it there not looked upon as part of the family
there money makers as part of a business. i was thinking the same they must have atleast 12 bitches and 6 studs and some acres to go with it
but that is not a ludicrus amount of dogs for a well established AB kennel because the more you breed the more dogs you end up with.
1 litter per year. It doesn't matter how many litters they have. You could just breed your pet once just because you think it is just so darn cute and the puppies would be so adorable, and you are a BYB in my book.
I have an average of 3-4 litters a year and I know even that many will keep me more than busy !

I agree. I wasn't willing to vote, because IMO the dog(s) that have been tested and worked and produce OFA Excellent, NCL clear, excellent conformation dogs with stable temperments should be bred as seen fit (how long is the line waiting for a pup from said breeder...) I know when I got Fina it was by chance, and I had been talking to several breeders over several years before deciding upon her.

IMO a good breeder has to start somewhere (years of research and work) move into breeding (fostering or working with a mentor) and then finding a line that will give them the results they are looking for. After that, if they have 1 2 or 3 litters a year *with proven titled dogs THAN SO BE IT. There would be a line out the door waiting for those dogs to be born.

I'd just like to say, that I think people are talking about 2 different things here. If you're talking about a PROFESSIONAL, responsible breeder, like say Razor's Edge... then yes, I THINK once a year is fine. And I personally wouldn't do it MORE than once per year, as I feel there are too many dogs out there anyway, but that's JMO. That's what I tried to convey in my post. But I think most people on here are assuming you mean just any random person deciding to breed. Like if I suddenly decided to breed my 2 dogs (they are fixed, but for the sake of argument, let's pretend they're not)... then yes, once a year or ANY breeding at all would be too many, and would make me a BYB. People are debating over 2 very different things.
personally i think more than 2 litters a year is rediculous in any circumastance.
there is just simply no need to be pumping out that many puppies.
