I don't think you can put a number on it, all depends. If a breeder can place at least some of the puppies in working homes or keeps them for his own program then I don't see a problem with him having more than a couple litters a year. Probably still a rare thing in AB's, but I'm sure there are MAL or GSD breeders out there that have several litters a year and most of the puppies end up in working homes. On the other hand a breeder that only has one litter a year and sells all the puppies to pet homes is a BYB or Puppymiller, IMO

There are lots of "working" breeders that breed ALOT look at Leerburg. ALL his pups go to police, schutzhund, ring, therpy, agility homes.. all working homes. I think he has had over 100 litters. All the parents are x rayed, worked, titled, evauted by the top trainers. I think that is too many puppies but that all depends on who you talk to. Leerburg has done alot and really cares for the breed and working. What i am trying to say here is... who am i to judge if GOOD breeders (meaning..x raying, temperment evualtions, working titles, ncl testing, ethical breeding) and ALL the puppies are spoken for before the litter is taken place, because those people LOVE the parents and want somthing out of them . i see no problem with it.... if its a nice litter REPEAT it! thats what good breeding is about, putting out sound healthy puppies. If BYB and PUPPYMILLS would STOP and let the GOOD breeders handle things we wouldnt be on here saying "theres too many puppies out there" this is not because of good breeders, this is because of puppymilling, moneyhungry as#@$$. I dont think its fair for good breeders researching their lines, bettering their program and bettering the breed to be put in the same category and get dumped on.
I know LOTS of good breeders out there that produce ALOT and as long as their puppies are sound, healthy proven line.. i am not judging them.

AB owners have to think.......look at your pedigrees of your dogs.... most of ALL out dogs are traced back same linage... dont ya think thats ALOT of puppies back then from the same bitches...???? you see the same ones all the time.

Yes, I know. That's a lot of puppies. But as long as he doesn't flood pet homes with his puppies, I don't think it's a big problem. Must be pretty hard to keep track of all those litters.
I understand there is a big difference between a breeder that sells his pets in the Sunday paper and one that does all the health and temperament testing and usually has his litters spoken for before they hit the ground.
But I don't see what it does for the breed, it's a working breed not a companion breed. If all the puppies end up in a pet home, the litter should not have happened no matter what types of testing the parents had, JMO.

Yeah i dont know he keeps track either but he does been doing it along time... and i dont think he even has to advertise anymore....
PET puppies dont better the breed they are out and about. I dont care about the home as long as they do SOMETHING
show, agility, flyball, schutzhund, ring, mondio, sundog, psa, therpy, hog hunting WHATEVER!!!!! there is sooo much out there for these puppies to be doing!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do owners not realize Dogs want a job!!! they are happier!!! and it builds a better bond!!!! pet homes just dont make sense. They r only there for the weaker pups the breeders couldnt get rid of to good home.

just thought i'd have some fun, see i thought about breeding until i read some horror stories so now i think breeding is cruel and wrong. well the way that most ppl peddle pups at least. good words keep making me think :D

I agree with Lisa (of course), but might I also remind people that a reponsible & respectable breeder ONLY breeds to improve upon his/her own yard & upon the breed itself. They do NOT breed to sell dogs especially when those dogs are getting sold to any Joe Blow with money in his hands.

A byb is a byb. But to answer the poll, anyone who has more than 1 litter a year (or even just 1) to SELL puppies from, is a PUPPY PEDDLER! There is NO way around this! And we all are seeing what puppy peddlers are doing to the breed--they are placing tens of thousands of dogs every year into the hands of people who have no business owning living, breathing creatures much less dogs of the "pit bull" breeds. And YES, even so-called "respectable" breeders who have tested their dogs can be puppy peddlers--if they breed litters just to sell.

Now, if a person has planned 2 litters this upcoming year to improve upon his own yard (is actually breeding true to standard bulldogs) & is willing to cull those that don't make the cut, then he is NOT a puppy peddler. "Why?" might you ask? Because he's not making money by selling dogs to the first person with cash in their hands.

And btw, ALL bybs, regardless of how many litters a year they have, are puppy peddlers.
