Well last week we took Scarlet to the vet for what I thought was an ear infection and her poody was still swollen from her first heat which ended 3 weeks ago. She ended up having a yeast infection. But the first thing he said was her tits should not be that swollen...has she been acting like she is pregnant. Is she nesting??? I said no, but about 2-3 weeks before her heat we got a new puppy...he said ohhhh!! He believes that when a dog goes in to heat it should be like an on off switch for them if they are not pregnant. He said bringing the puppy home most likely confused her and he said she is stuck in between on and off. Her hormones are wacked. He gave her a cortozone shot and said it would help with the swelling and stop her heat completley. He said she would be more sepseptible(sp??) to infections. It was a little strange just because I have never had a vet tell me this but he said the best cure would be to get her pregnant. We were planning on having her fixed in the next 2 months. He said fixing her will just stop the hormones all together but wont put her in the right state of mind, allowing her to get pregnant would allow her to have a normal cycle which he said would zap her hormones back to normal and then get her fixed. I just don't know... I have never had a vet tell me to breed my dog...its always spay and neuter your dog. Has anyone ever heard of this??? Please any advice!!! We were going back and forth about weather we were going to breed her or not already but sice she is not papered we decided not to. But now I don't know, If it is in her best interest I will but if not I wont.

I would say no to the breeding... but then again I am not a vet, etc... I know my brother in-laws female APBT has tried to mother Titus since we got him she is about 3 years old but even tho she was fixed when she was a puppy and never had a heat she still tries to protect and do motherly things with him... kinda weird but I think it is just their female thinking kicking in???

In all honesty, I would get a second opinion. It may be true that breeding her will "reset" her hormones, so to speak, but there must be a better way than adding to the already overpopulation of unwanted puppies and surely a good vet would recognize that.

Thanks guys...I just felt like it was all just a wierd thing. She is doing much better now...the cortozone (sp??) shot seemed to help with the poody size and all. I am going to do alot more research before I decide what we are going to do!!

any vet that would suggest breeding a dog to resolve a false pregnancy i would worry about. personally, i would change vets but definitely get a second opinion . if you have a reproduction specialist in the neibourhood all the better

When my sister-in-law was pregnant, her dog was obsessed with smelling her belly. She ended up having a false pregnancy. She got into the laundry and was carrying around rolled up socks like they were her babies. She would lay down and put them up to her teats like she was nursing them and then she would lick them like she was cleaning them. It was the cutest thing I've ever seen. She got over it and it seems that her case was pretty extreme. I think it would be extremely crazy to get her pregnant. I agree that getting a new vet or a second opinion would be very wise. Besides, I think Scarlet is way too young to be a mom!

She is doing better physically...not swollen anymore...still has tits though. She just has been real moppy and depressed lateley...she is like a different dog. She is normally crazy hyper and plays all day....now she has calmed alot (good thing!!) but she sleeps alot too!! I don't know what I am going to do....we'll just wait and see how things go!

Thanks for the advice and care!!

Does anyone know if dogs can have this mothering instinct after they've been spayed? Yesterday, Heaven found one of Jr's stuffed animals -- it was a little stuffed bulldog, very cute... but she carried it gently in her mouth and seemed to be protecting it. It was very strange coming from a dog who rips apart any toy in her sight.
