Hello bulldogbreeds.com forum members and readers I NEED HELP,
Wow. Ok I don't really know where to begin and it might be a bit extensive but please I'm begging everyone if you have any opinions or anything please help me. So, I have a one year old English Bulldog named Mommas. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old, and got her through a friend that had a litter of puppies through his male and female bulldogs. We wanted the runt of the litter, mostly because sometimes they're the best dogs in the world, and that's what we got her :). I have trained this dog from day one of receiving her. She knows almost every trick in the book, she knows how to properly walk beside me and stop and sit on every corner, and knows her commands very well blah blah blah etc. It was fairly easy to train her, but she is very stubborn still and sometimes ignores what I request but besides the point that's just a little bit about her.

My main reasoning for joining was because I desperately need help with her. Our dog is SUPER hyper, and eats/drinks extremely fast. By extreme, i mean EXTREME. She is kennel trained since she was a pup, and is in her kennel throughout the night or whenever no one is home (cause of work, errands etc). She can't be left out of the kennel by herself in our home because she will destroy things. We regularly take her to our local dog park, go on long 2-3 hour walks on a nearby trail. This helps her to calm down only a little bit, even if it's 110 degrees outside her energy level still doesn't calm down. I'm not asking for a rock that sits in my house and snores, but I'm looking to calm her down for her own being and our sanity (sucks to even say that but its the truth). She is up to date on shots and receives heartgaurd monthly(different type of worm prevention). She has not had her first heat, which is odd, and she has not been spayed yet, but we're working on that and we do want it to get done.

The hyperness brings me to her eating/drinking habits which they absolutely terrify me. I have tried every method out there to slow her down but nothing has worked. I have tried...... slow feeding bowl, large bowl with large objects placed in the bowl, scattering the food around the floor, hand feeding, elevating, tricks for each piece of kibble till it's gone, even throwing her food and telling her to go get it. Another way is I have filled her bowl and left it in the kitchen (all these methods i have tried in different rooms of our apartment) and completely left her in there by herself still no hope. When she is eating out of her bowl I have had to train her to "leave it" and "get it", which she does, but no matter what she inhales her food, and doesn't properly digest it at all, doesn't even chew it just swallows it hole. She has even chocked one time on a piece of kibble and where I freaked out because I didn't know doggy CPR (if there is a difference?) luckily i tapped her on the back a couple times and it came up. Absolutely terrifying, but point is her body is not getting almost any nutrients, and isn't gaining any weight like a normal sized bulldog. People call her very petite, I think its odd. She just seems starved when she isn't. Same with her water, I'll take her to the dog park where she will drink the whole HUGE bowl of water that they have out there and throw it all back up in 2 minutes. I dont know what to do about it, and I'm thinking maybe thats why she's so hyper? We feed her 3 1/2 - 4 cups a day, yes that's right, and also boil her an egg 3 times a week. And she looks like she has been starved her whole life, and she acts like it too. But our vet swears up and down she has no worms or parasites. Maybe she has some time of condition like dog ADHD or some kind of digestive problem? I'm lost for words, and I'm so blank, I dont know what to do, but her excessive hyperactivity is driving us crazy and im sure its bothering her too. There's gotta be a medium, and I feel like we have tried everything! She is a smart loving, wonderful dog and I just want the best for her, and her health most importantly. I'm hoping someone can help out there, i really appreciate you all for reading my story. Thank you.

What kind of food are you feeding her? There was a topic discussed here a while back about high protein levels in food causing hyper-activity. As far as your dog not getting any nutrients because it eats to fast, unless she's pooping it as fast as she eats it her body should be absorbing it.

Well mrsklein, here is my take:

A lot of issues you are talking about are completely normal for a bulldog. The fast eating- my oeb did this when he was on kibble and continues this on raw. He throws up almost daily. But I'm not really worried about it. You said you hand fed, why didn't that work? It slowed her down, correct? What about the hand feeding or kibble by kibble didn't you think worked?

Also, she's only a year old. She's still a puppy! She doesn't have dog ADHD. Shes still young and energetic. That's awesome! Obviously she's getting proper nutrients if she has this energy. I wouldn't worry. What food are you feeding? How often are you feeding? Also, since shes from a backyard breeder, you don't know what issues she may have. Since you say she's choked on kibble, she may had some trachea/esophagus issues which are common in bulldogs. Like i said, my oeb has eating issues too. He tries to swallow everything (chicken backs, quarters, turkey necks) whole.

I also suggest nixing the dog park. There is a sticky on why dog parks are a bad idea for not just bully's, but all dogs. Most members here do not go to dog parks. They are filthy and create an uncontrolled environment which can be bad for mommas.

Does your vet think she is underweight? Maybe some pictures would help. Bulldogs arent supposed to be beefy. A lean dog is a healthy dog. You said she was the runt if the litter so it's normal that she is small. People may comment that she looks starved, but many people like to see fat beefed up eb's when in reality, mommas may be in top physical condition. I really wouldn't worry.

It sounds like you have the training under control. Some dogs need to be kenneled their whole lives, and that's just fine. How often do you exercise her? Remember, a nice long walk goes a long way. And she needs both mental and physical stimulation to wear her out. I like to hide treats around my house and have the dogs hunt for them. It's hilarious and gets them to use their nose and memory.

My 2 year old am bully is very hyper. She gets the zoomies all the time and walks like a jerk. I work with her daily and still she pulls. She's just high energy where as my oeb is lazy lazy lazy. Both same age dogs, both rescues, both weigh close in size. But lucy eats about 5 oz more food then Murphy does because she is higher energy and has a huger metabolism. My point is, every dog is different. Just because you thought an EB was lower energy doesn't necessarily mean that will be the case.

From reading your story I think you have everything under control and she is just a high energy puppy :)

I don't see anything wrong here, except a) you take your dog to a dog park and b) you don't need to boil the egg. Raw is better for her.

She is still a puppy, and the energy is normal. Take advance of her food drive to proof her training. Continue to hand feed and do it at a park or similar. Make it interactive ad very rewarding, improve her focus and the stubbornness will go away. When she doesn't listen don't let it slide, correct her and he will catch on when she realizes her ONLY option is to listen to you.

So just take a breath, and realize that this is normal. She sounds like a good dog.

I have to agree with Tina and Steph the Hyper activity is because she is still very young. My pup is 2 and still loves to go on long walks and play, play and play. Harley eats all the time and does not gain any weight. Now she is not underweight and she gets more then enough food (kibble). She is constantley begging for food and my teenagers are more then happy to feed her extra (snacks). If I ate the way my dog does I would way 400 pounds. But every time we go to the vet she weighs the same (52-53 pounds) and he says she is muscular and well perportioned. Last blood work for her came back perfect. Unless the vet is concerned about her weight I would just relax and dont stress too much about it.
