luna has taken to this really annoying habit of roaming the house at around 3:30am. neither if us can sleep through it and at times she even whines at the door (which is WIDE open by the way!) i can't figure out for the life of me why she's doing this - it almost seems like restless or compulsive behavior. we take her for long walks before bed time, she still roams. we take her to her doggie door, she doesn't have to go out. we set her on her bed, she gets up two minutes later to start roaming all over again.

the only solution i have some up with is a crate. we've been reluctant to try it cause she seemed okay without - there is the occasional "incident" with a pair of shoes (more so since we've been doing construction), but she's usually okay when we go out.

am i jumping to conclusions that crating her at night will be the solution to my problems? she was only crated when potty training and never since. she'll be two on october 5th.

anyone have words of advice?

yes, we've tried it both ways.
i thought that too at first, cause the family we apoted her from said that she'd get up in the middle of the night and roam the house to check on the kids and see that everything was okay, then come back to bed. but it seems to have progressed from that - like i said, bordering on obsessive now.

Oooh wow. Very interesting. I guess you could try crating her in your room at night...make sure you give her lots of treats and praise.

I guess we're lucky that our guy just wants to spend his evenings/mornings snoring happily on the bed.

Here's a thought. I know I don't know much,

But you're doing a lot of construction in your house? Maybe she's just checking to see if everything is alright and she doesn't like the work that's being done.

Or if you're redoing the house a bit maybe she's just a little bit restless from that?

success!!!

so we crated last night and all i can say is it was the BEST night sleep i've gotten since this stupid construction started. luna seemed to love it right away and she slept like a baby!
yay!!! hooray for crating - don't know why i avoided it for so long!

you were able to just put your dog in a crate that night w/out any "easing into it"? The reason why I ask is that I'm adopting a Pit on sunday and concerned about putting him in a crate.
A lot of dogs view the crate as a den, their home/safe place. My Joe enjoys his crate when the cats (I have 4 of them 2 adults and 2 kittens) the kittens from time to time will get a little wired up and want to play non stop. When this occurs he goes to his crate and the kittens seem to know this is his home. SO the crate is not a bad place and if the dog is eased into using the crate they will accept the crate as a safe place. Good luck on your adoption. Make sure you post some photos It's mandatory here! LOL!

we've had luna for just about a year now - or a year this fall - and we've never done the crate with her. we decided to get one on craig's list cause i figured if she didn't like it it wouldn't be that big of a loss, money-wise. the lady opened it up to demonstatre how easily it went up and down, luna went in and rested her big meat-head on the ledge. i think it was love at first sight!
so, two well-rested days later, luna's in love with the crate, and i'm in love with my dog again (it was rough there for a second...!)
good luck with your new guy!

Dogs will usually rome at night if they are not fixed due to their hormones rising.
They will also rome at night if there is some noise outside that they hear that
you do not hear and it is a noise that regulaly takes place around the same time.
It makes them feel uneasy. Dogs can feel the changes in the weather pattern and
that will make them uneasy. I have an aircondtioner that I added two extra vents
into my bedroom. When the AC comes on, it sounds like a rain storm. When my dog,
Holly is in there, the first thing she does is get up and go out of the room. She paces
until it shuts off. But is at it again when it comes back on again.

Just take notes of what is going on at the time she is getting restless and what seems
to end when she finally settles down.
