Hi all, just wanted some advice on how to break our dog Murphy of jumping up on people. We have a 10 1/2 month old male Boxer/American Bulldog. He is the sweetest most affectionate dog and generally is very well behaved. He does have the irrating habit of greeting guests by jumping up on them. When he's just with us I can make him behave by putting my hand out and telling him "down". However he gets so terribly excited when company arrives that all bets are off. Any suggestions???

Try getting your guest to turn their back on him if he keeps jumping, kinda ignoring him. This worked great for our boy Shadow, he learned that when he jumps up on someone they arent going to pet him so he realized he had to go about a different way on getting their attention.

But Im sure there are some other helpful tips from the members here.

We are still working with Moose on this very same issue but this is what I am doing right now with him and it seems to be working. When I have company we make him sit first before they come in and then I will allow him to get up to say hi BUT if he gets to excited I will say down and he won't jump (80 pounds jumping at you is not fun) but if he still is crazy I will make him sit until he calms. This is in the works right not but seems to b e working. It won't happen over night but if you keep it up he should learn. I use to put him outside and he didn't like that either. Good luck and be patient.

I have the same problem with my 6 month old American Bulldog. What we have been doing is holding him by the collar and making him sit until the person comes in side. As he starts to go crazy I just keep holding him by the collar saying sit....etc.... Then I let him go and just keep my eyes on him...the minute he jumps, we just say down....and if he doesn't listen becuase of all of the excitement I just grab his collar again and make him sit. He usually hates that he has to sit ....so he seems to be gettting that he can be excited and sniff them and stuff ....but no jumping. And I just try to have my guests ignore him for the initial entrance. It's been working out pretty good.....he calms down pretty quickly these days. There were certain people that let him jump up on them...and we had to put a stop to that, so far the consistency has been working out pretty good. Good luck! Don' forget crankiness too...I know my pup gets cranky and his whole attitude changes, (I don't know if other dogs have that problem.)

Also dont yell or make eye contact with him when he does this. My two also have to sit before getting any attention.
