I have been wary of passing pit bulls with my dogs because pits are fighting dogs so I assume the dog is dog agressive. No offense - it's like if someone passes by me with their cat on a leash and picks up the cat because she assumes my sighthound would eat her cat. Try not to be offended.
As for heeling on the right or left. My dogs all learned heeling on the left but in agility Milo needed to be able to heel off lead from both sides so I switch up for variety. This reminds me of horseback riding lessons. We learn to mount and dismount on the right side of the horse. Once an instructor said, "it's an emergency, dismount from the left". My brain had no idea how to do it.
