Just trying to get some info
if i find anything along the way ill post or pm 4 ya !
High Jumpin Mikie was known to be a really intense bulldog!! You can read about him and see video of him on Benny Munoz website! Smooch is out of Boyd's Charolais Hiefer who is out of Snopes Bronco SCH III BST II CD and Boyd's Bumpkin who is out of Smashing Pumpkin and Mikie. Mikie is in ALOT of peds!

Here is Bennys site:

There was also a call out done on Mikie (I love those callouts) on the True Grit board. You can read what was said about him here:

http://www.true-grit.us/cgi-bin/YaBB2/YaBB.pl?num=1104764103

PS It has been determined that Mikie was an NCL carrier.

Awesome Lisa, thanks. I actually watched that video a while ago and didnt realize it was her grandpop, lol. Nice looking dog. Munoz has some great videos.

I was searching on True Grit but didnt come accross that call out. Thanks a million.

Hine's Snowbird is in her ped too and I heard alot about her. I think she is in the Putnam book if I'm not mistaken. I came accross her on a NCL discussion thread but they were talking about how her lines are NCL free. I hope that to be true
Hey Thom. You should read up more on the NCL issue, lots of threads over on the TG board. Mikie was out of Moleque who was out of Hines Snowbird (AKA Dorseys Flash) and Country Boy. If you had a full 6 generation ped you would see that beyond Snowbird its all ? marks. Moleque was also a known carrier (that's how Mikie ended up being a carrier) but where where Moleque got the gene from is the big debate. Could it have been just a mutant gene she got or did she get it from one of her parents?? I don't think anyone knows for sure. The fact that Bill Hines was a known paper hanger is also at issue. I was going to post Smooch's pedigree for you to see all the n/a's after Snowibird but when I uploaded it to Shutterfly it came out too small and you can barely read the print. Any suggestions on that?

How cute!!! They're related!!! :D

Lisa, with regards to the NCL, is ok for a breeder to breed a carrier or should they really have not done that?

At the time there was no DNA test available to test for the NCL gene. Mikie is now deceased but through record keeping people were able to determine that Mikie and Moleque were both carriers. Back then NCL was being mis diagnosed by vets because no one knew about it. A dog got crippled and often times it was chalked up as just being bad hips. A few others thought something was up and they began pushing for answers. In late 2004 scientists discovered how to test for the gene. As far as breeding carriers goes, it can be done but one must be VERY careful. If a dog is a carrier you must breed to a dog that is clear of the gene. Then the resulting pups will still each have a 50% chance of being a carrier so the whole litter would have to be tested before they went to their homes. Carriers do not come down with the disease but they can produce it when bred to other carriers. Liz Hansen, the spokeswoman from the U of Missouri where they do the testing says it is importnat to keep carriers in the gene pool if they are superior in all other areas. There are alot of good dogs, past and present who are NCL carriers. It's important that if you breed a carrier to a clear that you do it correctly and responsibly and that means testing the whole litter and either spaying/neutering or culling all carriers. Most people aren't repsonsible enough to take all these precautions but those who are can get what they want out of such a breeding (select the best pup(s) that tested clear of the gene) and then hopefully that carrier will never have to be bred again. It's complicated enough breeding bull breeds since good homes are few and far between. Throw something like this into the mix and it makes breeding them even more complicated. One reason why I get on the cases of so many people who want to breed AB's and know nothing about the disease. Alot of dogs out there are carriers and their owners don't even know it!

Here is something Liz Hansen wrote to another bulldog person. It was posted on the TG board. Good read.

Thanks for the info Lisa. I have to get a better grasp on genetics and how these diseases are passed. Do you have any good sites with info on dog genetics? I bet alot of AB breeders never even heard of NCL.

If you want, you could send me the scan of your dog's peds and I can resize them and host them.
